September 21, 3:05 PM | Calendar |
Weldon Thomson Started by a Motorcycle crash -
From CBS8.com:
"Ground crews fought the blaze with help from personnel aboard two air tankers and three helicopters. Deputies, meanwhile, advised residents of about two dozen homes in the area to evacuate as a precaution.

Firefighters had the spread of the flames, which came within a few hundred feet of several residences, halted by 2:45 p.m."

Mike Mike Trask 4 months of build up and just through my back out 3 days before rece. Can't harldy walk. Run smart, prep smarter. Less than thrilled to say the least. Doc says don't even think about it without likely severe nerve damage. I will toast my coffee to all runners and a prayer at 7am Sat morning. God Bless and good luck.

Jason Atkins So sorry to hear the bad news! Rest up and hopefully we'll see you out on the trails at another race in the future, with a healthy back this time!

Nathan Nathan Simpson Is everybody going crazy yet. Trying hard not to run this week.
September 17, 7:41 PM | Calendar |
Mike Trask Yes, and watching youtube videos of Western States 100 videos and movie trailer is not helping. But I have been strongly encouragesd to stay off the legs, and that at mile 27 they will thank me.
September 18, 10:03 AM
Jason Atkins I'm so excited and nervous all at the same time. This will be my first ultra. Good luck to you all and see you bright and early Saturday!
September 19, 2:14 PM
David Lopez I ran an easy 6 this week(3 Tue and 3 Thurs) and today I felt like maybe I should't have. Feel great just though maybe I should have had more leg rest.

Michael Michael Huber Q: My ''support crew'' a.k.a. wife+kids are not too enthusiastic about getting up with me at 4 a.m. on race day (I wonder why?). Nevertheless I would like to pick up some personal goodies or a small back bag at Penny Pines before starting the downhill stretch. When does the support crew start setting up the station at Penny Pines? Is it possible to leave a small bag with them before the briefing?
September 17, 8:39 PM | Calendar |
Michael Huber Ha ha, just read the small print. No drop bags. That answers my question.

September 19, 10:06 PM
Jason Jason Kenyon Is there a way to purchase an adventure pass if one is not arriving until the day of the race? I assume REI will be closed at 5 in the morning.
September 14, 10:31 AM | Calendar |
Mike Trask We don't need one if racing/running & parking at Al B camp correct? Only support crew does. Yes?
September 14, 2:44 PM
Brian Gonzales You do NOT need an adventure pass if you just part at Al Bahr. Only if you have a crew, they would need an adventure pass to park at Penny Pines or Noble Canyon Trailhead. They should have time after the start to go get one in Laguna or Pine valley.
September 14, 4:47 PM
Jason Kenyon Thanks for clearing that up.

Michael Michael Huber Two questions for the Organizers:

(1) Will the bibs be handed out during the pre-race briefing on race day, or is there a pre-race pickup somewhere here in town?

(2) In what form will the water be handed out at the aid stations? Giganto-jugs, or will there be individual 16 oz. bottles available?
September 10, 3:50 PM | Calendar |
Holly Heysham Hi Michael, I know I'm not an organizer but I've done the race in the past. Typically the bibs are issued morning of before the pre-race briefing. This way everyone can listen to important details (and you'll want to hear them). As far as water being handed out at aide stations. They are manned and run by people who know what you need. They are trail angels I swear! They typically have different goodies and drinks on tables in throw away cups if you want/need to stop and feed. If you have a pack/ water bottle or both they will refill it for you. Make sure you have something to carry water/sports drink in.. you will definitely need it. If you have a special type of sports drink power that you perfer to use I would bring it along. The sports drink they have at an aide station may not be the one you use. Hope that helps and good luck!
September 13, 2:05 PM
Michael Huber OK, great! Thanks. I am just worried about measuring out the right amount of liquid to refill my back bag. I'll use the graduation on the bladder of my hydration pack and carry my own electrolyte to be on the safe side.
September 14, 12:45 PM
Nathan Nathan Simpson losts of rain up in pine vally today. crazy if we got to race in rain.
September 10, 6:24 PM | Calendar |
Mike Trask Assuming rain or shine... but lightning may be a factor. I'll sign a waiver, want to run no matter what. Weather this morning showed 10 days out without thunder storms but not sure they really know that far out.

Mike Mike Trask 12 days! Good thing temp is dropping and humidity is down! BaaaHahahaha. Can't wait. First ultra for me and very excited.

Timothy Timothy Pollock I'm planning on doing a run starting from the bottom of the canyon, heading up to sunrise highway then back down, this saturday (9/1). Anyone who wants to join is more than welcome. I'm thinking a 6am start from the trailhead.
August 28, 9:37 AM | Calendar |
Mariano Orlando Tim, I am thinking of joining you. Would a 7:00 am start work? Also, it may be more racelike to run down then up. We could stash water at the bottom. Mario Orlando 714-328-6310 marmarie@pacbell.net

August 31, 4:47 AM
Timothy Pollock It's supposed to get into the 90's, so I wanted to start as early as possible. Could you do 630ish? I had planned on just refilling my water at the top of the canyon, therefore not having to worry about/waste time stashing water.
August 31, 1:39 PM
Mariano Orlando Tim, I'll try to make it but do not wait for me past 6:30 am. Have a good run. Mario Orlando
August 31, 12:12 PM
Mike Trask Can I ask how the temp was on your runs? Start, middle finish and humidity? Now less than 3 weeks to go and seeing a change int he weather anytime soon.
September 3, 8:25 AM
Mariano Orlando Mike, When I started at 6:45 am on Saturday 9/1 the temp was in the 50's at the Pine Valley trailhead. As you went up the trail the temp increased but because of the shade at that time of day the solar beating was not bad. By the time I reached Penny Pines three hours later the temp was in the 80's, and was about the same when I got back down to the bottom. Humidity was not bad and neither were the gnats. Just lots of rocks.

Michael Michael Huber I want to run the canyon from top down and then up this Sunday morning, but I have to figure out what's worse: sacrificing precious snoozing time to drop off supplies at the NC trailhead before going up to Penny Pines, or carrying 3 liters of water on my back on the way down the canyon. How much time do I have to factor in for stashing water at the NC trail head if I decide to do so ? Has anyone done the run from top to bottom and back without resupplying at the bottom? Your thoughts are welcomed.
August 31, 10:10 PM | Calendar |
Mike Trask I'd say practice with what you will carry on race day. I realize the differecnes are that during the race there will be aid stations but simulate it as close to possible are my thoughts.

September 3, 8:24 AM
Michael Michael Huber Additional question: What is the best/safest place to deposit a water jug at the NC trail head? I'd hate to get down there and find that my stuff is gone.

Arturo Arturo Marin Can someone tell the approximate temperature for the start and at noon?
For the race date of course

August 22, 10:27 AM | Calendar |
Spencer Moseley Last year was like 40 at start (nice) and 85 around noon. I think given this summers heat I would plan on a hot race this year.
August 22, 10:31 AM
Arturo Marin Thx Spencer for your info. Appreciate it
August 27, 5:18 PM
Mike Mike Trask Need advice - I have been running all my runs midday to help train for warm temps as everything I read says NC is a hot race(and it fits work schedule). Somewhere around 16-17 my legs start aching, then hurting / throbbing really bad. By 19 I'm walking, and they continue to hurt worse / the same as if running. I also stopped and stretched. I have done 8 marathons, an Ironman and tons of other races(tris and runs), never had the issue. I carry and drank 2 ltrs from camel pack, 2 water bottles that I refileld at fountains (poured 2 more on my head), salt tab, Gu's, a small gatorade, stopped and stretched.... When I weighed my self an hour after I retuend home (and drinking more) I was down 9 lbs from pre run weight. Possibly getting dehydrated enough muscles are cramping? My stomach was sloshing & full with fluid. So my questions,<br />1) Starting my long runs at noon in 96-103 heat a little over kill? <br />2) My theory on loss of enough water to cause cramping ?<br />I will take any feedback I can get. Appreciate it. Thanks.
August 11, 7:52 AM | Calendar |
Nathan Simpson I think like everything new we do. we have to ease are way into heat training. for me starting in the am when cool then finish the run up when it starts getting hot. so you only have to do about an hour or a little more of heat then start later and later . and maybe slow the pace down a bit more when it hot. but i am just talking about what has helped me. i m just learning as we all are. I live in point loma so heat for us is 75. it is still a problem for me as well. but getting better as i ease my way into it.
August 11, 2:26 PM
Michael Huber Hi Mike,
I come from the same corner as you - some marathons behind me, first timer on the trails for a longer distance. I had similar problems in the beginning with hydration, electrolytes, etc. I totally underestimate how much more demanding this type of running is in terms of hydration, electrolytes, and calories. I have very little experience with this type of running to this end, but I think I understand a little about physiology and hope to do the right thing while being out there.
First, I'd say get used to the distance and terrain first, then bother about the heat. If it turns out to be really hot that day, just take back the pace and you will be fine. Avoid direct sun, leave your shirt on, wear a hat.
Second, if you really came home with -9lbs after "only" 20 miles or so, you were way under-hydrated. So you need to drink more, best in small increments. In addition, you lost a ton of electrolytes. I think this is where most commercial electrolyte drinks are way off. Their ion composition does often not reflect what actually leaves your body, and they are full of "magic stuff" that only makes you feel icky (I bet you drank some sort of "-orade" electrolyte throughout your run, hence the slushing in your belly when your body finally got fed up with all that antioxidant and artificial coloring and flavor sh**).
It was an eye-opener to me to read how much sodium you deplete per unit of sweat. There is one key study that I trust, which can be found here: http://jap.physiology.org/content/82/1/336.full
I did the math based on my sweat rate: Up to 1.5 liters of hydration loss per hour, equaling 1.7 grams of Na+ if all this were sweat! Actually you lose a significant amount of water via your breath (I guess this is ~1/4 of your total hydration loss), which does not contain salts. So you want to subtract that from your electrolyte balance. I settled with replenishing 75% of my water loss and 50% of my electrolyte loss during my runs (the latter, taking water loss through respiration into account, is probably more like like 75% effective replenishment). That's a lot of stuff to get into your body while running. Still, at the end of a 6 hour run you will come home ~5 lbs lighter, which is probably as much as you want to deplete your body.
I am keeping my hydration (i.e. clean water) separate from my electrolyte uptake. Otherwise I get sick. Hence I carry a large bladder of plain water and a small bladder with concentrated electrolyte (at the correct ratio of sodium, potassium, magnesium, and calcium) in my back bag. I take a couple sips of the salt solution twice per hour, wash it down with water, and sip clean water for the rest of the time to keep hydrated.
Complicated you say?! Hey, it's just another experiment :-) Don't take my word for anything I post here, I am a bloody beginner and I will not be held liable for any of my statements here. However, I'd be glad
August 13, 11:21 PM
Michael Huber uuhhh ........ long post? :-)
August 13, 11:21 PM
Paul Todd http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21780852
August 14, 11:09 AM
Michael Huber Very interesting find, Paul. Thanks! Looks like electrolytes are maybe not that important on the shorter distance (25k) measured by these authors.
August 14, 11:21 AM
Michael Huber BTW, I have to revise my breath water content estimation. It's much less, probably around 10% of total water loss. The air we exhale is close to saturated with water vapor, ~4% by weight. Based on this I estimate each breath contains ~ 100 microliters of water. I guess I will breathe ~10,000 times during a 50k run, resulting in exhalation of ~ 1 liter of water. Still significant, but not as much as I originally put it.
August 16, 6:03 PM
Ruth McCoy Sounds like you need more salt with your fluids. If you didn't stop to use the restroom several times during your run, then all that weight loss means you need to drink more fluids as well. If you are having sloshing in your stomach it's likely due to your body not absorbing the water very well. This can happen if you don't take in enough electrolytes with your fluids, or if you have gas build up or just from your digestive tract slowing down since all your blood is going to your running muscles. I would increase your salt and fluid intake (maybe try half strength Gatorade instead of water) and consider taking some Gas-x.
August 16, 9:11 PM
David Lopez This is all great information.

Holly Holly Heysham Happy Tuesday everyone! I'm wondering if anyone has a recommendation on places to stay in the area? I moved from SD to San Clemente last year and the idea of driving all that way race morning does not sound like a good time. Camping is out due to I may or may not have supporters (my parents) in tow. I did stay out that way in May for PCT 50, Laguna Mtn. Lodge?, but wasn't sure if there was something better/closer. Any help would be appreciated.

Happy Trails!

Joey Bryan Jennifer, so far it looks like we have 10 folks doing the run and we'd love to have you join us. We're spread out in pace and even have someone doing a speed walk of the route so we'll likelly range from 10 min. to maybe 16min. pace. This would be a nice group to fall inline with as most of us are veterans of this race and you're sure to find someone at your pace to run with. Hope to see you out there, Joey

July 24, 3:13 PM
Eli Ellefsen Thanks Spencer
July 24, 6:51 PM
Mike Trask Eli, 1/8th of a mile south on Sunrise highway is the El Prado camp ground that connects to the trail also. Its simply a State park camp ground that I have stayed at before over looking littel lake laguna. You would have no issue jogging through there as well.
July 27, 8:08 AM
Spencer Moseley I lead a military running group on most Sat mornings and we park at Penny Pines Trailhead and have never had a problem. It is easy to jump onto the PCT and do the loop on PCT and the meadow for a real nice 10 mile run.
July 27, 8:30 AM
Eli Ellefsen Thanks Mike, I'll keep that in mind, I know where that campground is.
July 31, 6:10 PM
Mike Mike Trask Ok, just signed up for Noble Canyon. Will be my first 50k. I run trails now in normal running shoes? My ankles are beginning to feel it. Should I run and train in trail shows? Little Lake and Big Lake Laguna trails seem pretty smoothe and soft? Not may rocks. DO I need them? Any advice would be great. Thx.
July 1, 5:09 PM | Calendar |
Mark Gilligan Hi Mike, I personally prefer road shoes over trail. The only time trail shoes make a difference are muddy and/or steep trails. Road shoes will weigh less and breath better, perfect for warm weather running. Just my two cents.

July 1, 5:40 PM
Holly Heysham Hi Mike, I have run this race a few times and only ever have done it in my trail shoes. There are some pretty steep sections and though parts of the trail can seem soft and less rocky there are parts that are the exact opposite. I'm not sure what you are running in now, but I think you should race in what you've been training in. It's just me but I wouldn't take the chance of not have the right shoe for the job. What you can do is try to make it out to different parts of the course (if possible) and take a look to see what you feel would be best.
July 10, 11:50 AM
Weldon Thomson I run much of Noble Canyon frequently and definitely appreciate trail shoes with a little rock protection in the mid soles although that has more to do with the bottom of my feet than ankles. Upper parts of the course, certainly the Meadows area, are pretty smooth and could be run in just about anything. Some sections of the canyon, though, are quite rocky (you might choose to walk them anyway). A lot has to do with how lightly you land on your foot strike, too, but I don't have a problem running the rocky sections in most trail shoes (peregrines, mountain massochists, and even MT-110's). Some people do run trails in road shoes but I find many that are more cushioned are too high and unstable, which could certainly be hard on ankles, and/or don't have enough rock protection. I find most trail shoes also seem to have more stable uppers which better limit foot movement and potential rolling. It really depends on the shoe though. Last year, Noble Canyon was my first 50K as well and I actually changed shoes at the bottom of the canyon with the idea that one shoe (lower and flatter) was better for the downhill, and only to about half marathon distance at which I knew it developed hot spots, and another (slightly higher and more supportive) for the climbs and for late in the run when I knew I'd be tired and my form would be wearing down. That seemed to work ok but I doubt I'll do it again this year as, having run a few more 50ks and a 50 miler, I've settled more on one shoe that I think works well overall.
July 19, 10:53 AM
Mark Bernstein I agree with the consensus that while any shoe is sufficient for the upper part of the trail, you really do need a trail shoe for the canyon descent and climb.
July 31, 4:09 PM

July 4, 2:49 PM
Jorge Corral Brian. hi, for camping on friday. what time is the latest we can show up, there is a group of about 10-12 coming up from TJ we would like to camp out, are toilets and bath available.??
July 9, 3:55 PM
Joey Bryan Jorge, the campground does have regular toilets and showers.
July 10, 9:55 AM
Brian Gonzales Jorge - Great that you're coming up the night before. With that size group please try to arrive no later than 9PM so you can setup camp without disturbing other runners that may want to go to sleep early. I will put glow sticks out Friday night that will guide you to the camping area.

Steve Yamamoto Mike, here's how to find the link: on Garmin Connect, go to the "Explore" tab and click on 'Show Filters'. Set Activity to 'Running', Event to 'Race', and Time to 'Last 365 Days'. Move map to zoom in on the Al Bahr Shrine Camp area, leave the keyword field blank and click 'search'. Yes, not quite like Google, but it works....

Mike Trask Thx Steve. Mile 18 and 19 look fun. 500 ft of climbing for each of those. Yeee haw!

Spencer Spencer Moseley Did Noble Canyon last year, but am still having a problem finding good stuff to eat or drink while on the course. Any suggestions? My stomach seems to reject almost everything and I end up bonking after runnin 30 miles on just water. Have lots of marathons under my belt but breaking above 30 miles always seems to be an issue.

Mike Trask I am that way with gatorade, I have to cut it with water or it caases problems. For fueling, I used trail mix on Ironmans before as it was easy to grab small amounts and had a mix of salt, protien and sugar. Maybe try that in little hand fulls occasionally to see what happens?
July 17, 11:14 AM
Jorge Corral do gels work for you?? fruit? bars?
July 17, 11:50 AM
Weldon Thomson I've done pretty well on GU Brew/Gels and small amounts of aid station goodies (Gummi/Jelly candys, Red Vines, PB&J, Fig Newtons) but my stomach usually seems to tolerate a lot. The only thing that's ever really bothered me was Chips Ahoy Cookies but I'm sure it was because I ate too many and downed them with Mtn Dew (too much sweet) late in a 50 mile run. Eating in smaller amounts more consistently/frequently definitely works better for me.

Arturo Marin Granola bars is a great option one little bite every once in a while
July 19, 12:47 PM
Arturo Marin I will put half water and half electrolyte in my camel water back pack
July 19, 12:47 PM
Spencer Moseley I have used Gels and my stomach turns after a while. Used amino vital a number of times but that is too sweet and I need to cut with water or it ends up like gatoraide. Tried cytomax this weekend and that was pretty good. A fellow runner suggest combo's. easy to pack, small bite size - high salt and calorie in a small package. And seriously, yacking half way through the course last year helped out.

Brian Brian Gonzales The 2012 Noble Canyon 50k forum is now active. Post or read about training runs. Ask or answer course questions with those familiar with the course etc
June 11, 10:16 PM | Calendar |
Jason Hennick Glad to see this forum open up. I have never run a 50k and am quite a newb but I have had my eye on Noble Canyon for quite a while. I plan on being there, so for now I am just trying to learn all that I can about what I need to do.
June 28, 1:59 PM
Darryl Sykes Same here Jason. New to the running community but have been thinking of the Noble Canyon 50k for quite a while. It's hard to train while deployed on a ship but I am determined to have fun and be successful at this race.
June 30, 2:50 AM
Christopher Radle I did my first 50k in Santa Barbara and I got worked. It will make you train harder and smarter. I am looking forward to a fun race. Good Luck!!
July 3, 12:53 PM
Arturo Marin Hi Brian do you know the exact distance of the ascend is it 14 or 16 miles??
July 19, 12:43 PM
Arturo Arturo Marin I just ran the half stonewall great run I runned with trail shoes they did great I think they have great traction specially on descents where I think is easier to fall like on the las 3 miles of the race it was all the way down

Jason Jason Hennick Does anyone here know the average slope of the course? I'm just trying to get some idea
of just how steep it is. Thanks!
July 4, 11:22 AM | Calendar |
Brian Gonzales Have you checked out the elevation profile on this page?
http://noblecanyon50k.com/maps/maps.htm
July 4, 2:51 PM
Jason Hennick Thanks, I have looked at that profile but was hoping someone here might know the percentage of slope as that number makes more sense to my brain than looking at a topo map. I am going to get out there and do some runs before Sept. 22nd.
July 5, 1:37 PM
Nathan Simpson i am also planing on getting up there to run the course. lets get a training run together for next weekend.
July 7, 6:42 AM
Spencer Moseley Here is a link for a MapMyRun route from the Noble Canyon trailhead up to the Rathole. It does not follow the bottom part of Noble Canyon like we will do on race day as this course is a little longer than race day but it is a good training run I did a couple of times last year in prep for the race. http://www.mapmyrun.com/routes/view/110520997
July 17, 7:12 AM
Michael Michael Huber Does anyone know if it is possible to convert a .kml file into a garmin format that can be loaded as a course onto a forerunner device? Or does one of you have the Noble Canyon 50k route saved as a garmin training center (.tcx) file? It would be great to load the course on my forerunner for easy navigation.
July 11, 1:43 PM | Calendar |
Thomas Keefer I have had good luck using this in the past but not specifically for that format: http://www.gpsies.com/convert.do
July 15, 9:06 PM
Michael Huber Thanks Thomas, that is a great site!
July 16, 9:59 AM
Mike Mike Trask Any one have a link to a Garmin GPS map for the actual race course? I want to see the climb rate from 15 to 25 miles. Looks like 3800' at mile 14 to 5800' at mile 26. So thats 2k over 12 miles (approx with a dip in it). I see the elevation chart on race page but looking for a little more detail. Thx.

Holly Heysham You will love it!!!! This was my first ever 50k race. Just be prepared for hot temps and beautiful views! Welcome!
July 10, 11:52 AM
Darryl Sykes Thanks Holly! Extensively mountain biked, hiked and done shorter runs in the area before. Should have said new to the "ultra" community. Because of my extended deployment I am missing the Leadville Trail 100 for the second year in a row so I wanted something to challenge myself when I get home. Either way, I am really looking forward to this.

Steven Steven Tally Sold out in 3 days! Shut out. If anyone has a bib they wont be using, please let me know (if they allow transfers). Will pay more than bib value. Again, only if they allow transfers.

Michael Michael Huber Training / Exploration run on Saturday: I would love to join Michael White (see below), but I have to start a bit earlier - arrive at the trail head at 6 a.m., start running no later than 6:15. I am planning on a ~30km / 3 hr effort. I have never been in the area, so I will just try to find my way around by map and a handful of waypoints. Feel free to meet up with me if you want!

Barbara Barbara Shainberg I have signed up for the Noble Canyon 50k, and am unfamiliar with the area. Will camping be available Friday night? If not camping, can anyone recommend a hotel nearby? Thank you!
July 3, 11:57 AM | Calendar |
Mike Trask There is a camp ground less than a mile away. Beleive its called El Segundo, in Cuyamaca. You could probably get a room in Julian which is a small little historical mining town about 15 mins away.
July 4, 8:20 AM
Brian Gonzales Yes camping is available Friday night at the start/finish (Al Bahr). It's $7 per person. No need to RSVP just show up. You will pay me then I will pay Al Bahr
July 4, 4:54 PM
Barbara Shainberg Thank you very much! I will bring a tent and camp out on Friday night.
July 5, 4:06 PM

July 5, 5:52 PM
Brian Gonzales Yah - there are flushing toilets water and showers.
July 5, 6:54 PM
