btw I hope they change the tape color on the 50 mile course.. Last year the tape was pink which happened to be the same color as the logging tape that loggers were using in the area. Not fun,

I ran the 50 mile last year which turned out to be 53 or 54...Those last 3 or 4 were merciless. I couldnt stop looking at my gps to pray for the finish... If youre in good shape then the course is not that tough...I wish I had trained harder...

Hey - Quick question, if you don't mind. Deer/Horse flies- must I fend off this intolerable cruelty, too? It's the season. Some places are swarming, others are free. Do you know the status on these trails, by any chance?

How well is the course marked for nighttime for the 100 miler? Is the tape reflective? How far apart are the markings and how careful do we need to be, especially the first night without a pacer?
Bradford Goodridge

it will be well marked and reflective

I was feeling pretty good about winning this bad boy, but with Speedgoat in the mix, hell, now I'm not so sure.

What will the parking be like if we drive to the start and can we pick up our packet the morning of the race?

Attention Cruel Jewel 50 Milers! Shuttle bus tickets are now available for you to purchase. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased through the following UltraSignup.com link: https://ultrasignup.com/shopping.aspx?did=30446. We are NOT trying to profit from the shuttle, so if there is money left over you will be given a partial refund. The shuttle will depart from Vogel State Park at 6am sharp race morning and take you to the start at Camp Morganton. (I would suggest being there no later than 5:45am just to be safe). The shuttle ride is approximately one hour. You MUST reserve space by signing up through ultrasignup.com. Do NOT show up race morning expecting a shuttle if you have not purchased your ticket! If you are taking the shuttle, your race packet will be at Vogel State Park, so you can leave any unnecessary items in your vehicle. You will need to purchase an overnight park pass to leave your vehicle at Vogel. You will have approximately one hour at Camp Morganton before the race starts. There is a place to wait inside and there are bathrooms. This is the turn-around for the 100 milers, so there will also be an aid station with typical race food, water, sports drink and sodas. The deadline for signing up for the shuttle bus is May 10th.

Any recommendations for hotels in Blue Ridge? A discount code would be wonderful also if available :) I'm also interested in the shuttle as I am an uncrewed solo runner.

We stayed at the Comfort Inn & Suites. Nice and clean with a pretty substantial continental breakfast. It's only about 6 miles from the race start. I don't have a discount code. And, yes, there will be a shuttle bus. Details will be posted soon on our Facebook page as well as in an email sent through ultrasignup.

I was reading the course description and wondering if the "course profile" depicted on the website is inverted?? (The highest point is close to the beginning and end rather than close to the turn-around?) Thanks!

Yes. This year we have changed the start finish location. We have (as of yesterday) finished an complete GPS track of the course and will be putting that info out soon.

Did the qualifying standards change? The website gives a list of 100 milers, but Ultrasignup and the old standards used to say any 100 mile trail race.

Hi Chris
Actually, the OLD standard was based on a list of qualifying 100 milers. The NEW standard is ANY 100 mile trail run or there is a short list of 50 milers with cut-off times that can be used for qualifying.
Here's the link to our website that states that: http://www.dumassevents.com/uploads/1/3/1/6/13160238/qualifying_races_for_cruel_jewel_1002015.pdf.
Where are you finding a list of qualifying 100 milers? Please send a link so I can check it out...there should not be one.

What is the camping situation at the start/finish for fri/sat
Leigh Saint
-
December 16, 9:53 AM
Vogel State park has paid camping. They have cabins for rent as well but we just found out they have already sold the cabins out for the weekend.
If you are doing the 50 miler there is camping at camp Morganton for free with access to bath and shower in the dining hall.
As a third option, there is lot of free camping in the National Forrest around Vogel and Morganton.

Hey. Does anyone know if this race is expected to sell out? I have a scheduling conflict, so I need to wait a bit to enter but am hoping there will still be space in a few weeks. ..
