AN ISLAND TRADITION 11 YEARS IN THE MAKING
Beautiful, soft, and well-maintained singletrack trails through old growth forest with waterfalls, lakes, cascading creeks, and views of the Puget Sound, the surrounding islands, and on clear days the Cascade and Olympic Mountain Ranges, including Mt. Baker, Mt. Rainier, and Mt. St Helens!
It's easy to see why the Orcas Island 50k (and its sister race, the Orcas Island 25k) is quite unique in the trail running world. The course alone makes this race special - old-growth forests, tough climbs, and spectacular views of surrounding islands, mountains, and Puget Sound - but what truly sets it apart is the sense of community, and the weekend-long celebration at Moran State Park. With live music, great post-race food and beer, and a chance to hang out all weekend on a gorgeous island with tough trails and great friends, these are the races that set Rainshadow apart from the rest, and will leave you wondering: Why run anywhere else?
BRUTAL BEAUTY IN 50K
The original Rainshadow race, the Orcas Island 50k is a true Pacific Northwest classic. With 8400+ feet of elevation gain, this course will make you work. We'll have four aid stations to help you along, though (mile 6.4, at Mountain Lake; mile 14.6, at Mt Pickett; mile 20.6, at North Arch; and 25.8, at the summit of Mt. Constitution - the highest point in the San Juans!), and far more spectacular views to keep you company along the way. Cut-offs will be strictly enforced at four places: Mountain Lake, at 10 am; Mt Pickett, at noon; North Arch, at 1:30 pm; and the Mt. Constitution summit at 3:30 pm. If a runner does not make it to these locations before these cut-off times, they may be removed from the race for their safety, the safety of our volunteers, and to keep the race on schedule for our permits and plans.
Please visit our Orcas Island 50k page for course maps, course descriptions, and elevation profile, and a detailed course description. Like all Rainshadow races, the 50k course will be well-marked, but please print maps and course descriptions and bring them with you if you'll need them on race-day. More information can be found at RainshadowRunning.com.
*As with all Rainshadow races, we don't do wait-lists, and all entries are non-refundable and non-transferable to other runners.*
*50% transfer credit will be available for anyone who emails us [info@RainshadowRunning.com] at least 30 days' prior to race-weekend.*
LOTTERY LOGISTICS - SO EVERYONE HAS A CHANCE TO RUN
Like it was in 2015, the 2016 Orcas Island 50k (and 25k) will be lottery races, ONLY because we don't want to crash UltraSignup the first day of registration, and we want everyone to have a chance to register. Last year 99.9% of folks who signed up for the lottery got into the race of their choosing, and the lottery just ensured no one had to be stressed about missing the opening date/opening hour and being out of luck when the race sold-out.
You can also bypass the lottery altogether by singing up to volunteer over race-weekend, or bringing someone to volunteer on your behalf while you're running. To bypass the lottery, you need to be CONFIRMED in a volunteer role via our volunteer coordinators, which you can do by emailing volunteer@RainshadowRunning.com.
Once you're confirmed in a volunteer role for the weekend, we'll take care of ensuring you get into the 50k race. Easy as pie!
