Unfortunately, on August 4th, 2015, we had to make the difficult and unfortunate call to cancel this year's events due to a nearby,very large wildfire 6 miles from the course and making air quality unsafe for both the 60k & 35k events. Next year, we'll be looking at alternate dates for these races. Thanks for your understanding and cooperation, and hope to see you at another Rainshadow event soon.


The Angels Staircase 60k (and its sister race, the Angels Staircase 35k) are part of 2015's U.S. SkyRunner races! Unlike any other race in the Washington, this is a true high alpine running experience. You'll climb to 8,000 feet (starting from 2100 feet!) at the top of Angels Staircase, finding yourself above treeline atop the rocky ridge line that separates the Lake Chelan and Methow River watersheds. From high points on the course you'll have views of Glacier Peak and the North Cascades, as well as great views into the Okanogan Range. You'll spend much of the run in high alpine - forests of pine, larch, and fir; meadows bursting with wildflowers; serene alpine lakes - and other than three miles of dirt forest service road at the start and finish, you won't see a single road or car or building. This race is very hard, very steep, very technical, and very remote!

Due to the remoteness and difficulty of the 60k course, THIS CAN'T BE YOUR FIRST RODEO! Runners must qualify by completing at least two "mountain" 50k (or longer) races prior to registering for the 60k, and are expected to follow mandatory rules. Be prepared for what may quite possibly be one of the hardest races you've ever done - it's tougher even than the 10,000 feet of gain might lead you to believe. This year, the 60k will be on SATURDAY, AUGUST 8TH, starting at 7:00 am, with check-in from 6:00-6:45 am, and the 35k will be on SUNDAY, AUGUST 9TH, starting at starting at 9:00 am, with check-in from 8:00-8:45 am. Again, this race is very remote, and your decision to participate should take this into consideration. Were something to happen to you, it would be hours before you arrived at a hospital. That said, it is exactly this isolation that helps make this race feel like it's run in the wilderness. The alpine environment and high rocky passes, plus the epic post-race spread of wood-fired pizza, local brews, and live bluegrass will all have you wondering: Why run anywhere else?


Both the 60k & 35k courses are located in the Okanogan National Forest in the Chelan Sawtooth Mountain Range which separates Lake Chelan from the Methow and Twisp River Valleys. Carlton, WA is the closest town but Twisp, Chelan, Pateros, and Winthrop are the closest towns of any decent size (i.e. big enough to have a grocery store). The Golden Lakes Map by Amazing Maps shows the new courses in their entirety and the Prince Creek Map #115 made by Greentrails Maps shows both of the courses, except the first and last 3 miles which are on FS Road 4340-200, starting from the Foggy Dew Camp and climbing about 1,000ft to the Foggy Dew Trailhead. We highly recommend each runner carry one of these maps and the course description. Except the first and last three miles both courses are entirely on really fun single track [WARNING: Here at Rainshadow Running we think steep rocky trails can be just as fun as smooth gradual or flat trails, and this race has it all]. Some of the time you'll be in the trees, but often, and especially for the 60k, you'll be up high and out in the open (so be ready to be exposed to the elements!). #ThereWillBeWeather
