The Goshen Gallop originated in 1978 through the idea of some local people thinking we (Blueberry Hill Inn and Ski Center) ought to host an event in the summer to match our winter event the American Ski Marathon. In the early years the race took the runners through the roads of Goshen only, incorporating the ever famous and very steep Carlisle Hill known as “Goshen Heartbreak Hill”. But, sometime in the early 80’s it was decided to make the Goshen Gallop a cross country run using the Blueberry Hill cross country ski trails and a few of Goshen’s gravel roads. This format was to stay in place and is still going today. And, due to its elevation profile and defensive running on rugged terrain it was coined as the “toughest 10.2K in New England”.
Over the years the Goshen Gallop has endured a variety of weather elements from the “mud run” in the 90’s, to high humidity, threatening thunderstorms, to low humidity and dust. But most of the time it is invariably held under perfect conditions – just wait a few minutes in Vermont and the weather will change, that’s what they say. Always held the 3rd Saturday of July, the Goshen Gallop is decidedly the event of the summer.
Runners come from far and wide, attracting over 100 racers from all over New England, the Mid Atlantic and various other states, not to mention Canada and even some other foreign countries. For 30 years the philosophy of the Goshen Gallop has been to stress the fun of the event by including great music, fantastic food and celebrated friendships.
Now in its 37th year, the Goshen Gallop course still takes the runner on those same gravel roads and cross country trails through the Moosalamoo National Recreation Area of the Green Mountain National Forest with fabulous views from the South end of Hogback – rated as one of the best view in Vermont.
