About the race
The 50K race takes you on a challenging route on the rugged New River section of the Cumberland Trail. This section crosses the high point of the trail, Cross Mountain, at over 3000’. Be prepared - this course could take up to twice your PR for a 50k. The climb up Cross Mountain is steep and will be slow. Start time for the 50K will be 6:30 am. A shuttle service will be provided for runners from the staging area at Cove Lake State Park to the starting point at the Cave Branch trail head.
The 10K race will start at the finish area for the 50K, at Cove Lake State Park, and will follow an out and back course along the final 3.1 miles of the 50K route, returning to the Cove Lake State Park finish line. Start time for the 10K will be 8:00 am.
The, new for 2014, 50k course is a point-to-point course run primarily on the New River section of the Cumberland Trail State Park. The course starts at the Cave Branch trail head and proceeds north and eastward along the Cumberland Trail to finish at Cove Lake State Park, in Caryville, Tn.
The 10K course starts at Shelter 3 (the finish area for both races) and runs through Cove Lake State Park, then out and back on the Cumberland Trail.
Both events will share the same finish back in Cove Lake State Park. Please visit the event website for a 50K course map.
Runners registering must have finished, within the past two years, a trail marathon in under 7 hrs, a trail 50k in under 8 hrs, or a longer ultramarathon race. Those demonstrating no such previous endurance activities will be denied entry. All entries will be subject to race director’s discretion. Convenient qualifying runs for locals are the DIrty Double Trail Marathon and the Norris Dam Hard Trail Race.
Rules & Etiquette
We are fortunate to have outstanding cooperation from the Cumberland Trail State Park, Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, Cove Lake State Park, and Fleet Feet Sports. For this relationship and race to continue, and for this to be safe and fun for everyone, we need to respect the rules and the trail. This means:
Absolutely no littering. Leave your trash at the aid stations.
Let runners ahead of you know before you pass them so they can provide some room.
No bicycles, strollers, rollerblades, or pets on the course.
No alcohol consumption or display of these containers is allowed in the park.
And though we hope never to do this, we reserve the right to disqualify anyone who exhibits unsportsmanlike conduct or is abusive to volunteers.
Not yet finalized, but it will be something cool!
Packets can be picked up from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, October 10 at Picnic Shelter #3 in Cove Lake State Park. They may also be picked up race-day morning starting at 5:00 a.m. in the pool parking lot area from which the shuttle will leave.
