Join the BUTS crew for our inaugural trail race on December 21st at Red Mountain Park. If you’re ready for your first ‘Ultra’ marathon and hibernation just isn’t your thing, then the “Bearly Ultra” is the run for you! A painful .8 of a mile longer than the easy 26.2 mile marathon! However, if your little paws aren’t ready for that leap in distance but still a four month nap doesn’t sound exciting, then drop down to the Cub Half Ultra. A whopping .4 of a mile longer than the typical “Half Marathon” at 13.5 miles. Finally, if you’re more of a hunter, then get your Pack together for the Wolf Pack Chase Relay. A pack of up to four runners will start exactly one hour after the bears for a relay sprint to the finish! The question is, can your pack hunt down and pass a bear?
Every Bear, Cub, and Wolf will receive a finisher’s award and since we all have no less than 30 race shirts currently in our closets, we’ll be giving away an awesome BUTS logoed hat instead!
There will be a costume contest as well as a post-race party to help soothe those weary paws!
All Bearly Ultra and Wolf Pack Relay runners will start on the powerline road and immediately head into the park on the Eureka Mines Trail. Then, runners will stay right on the BMRR South Trail and head towards the Ishkooda #14 Mine. Runners will turn left right before the mine on the Ike Maston Trail and head towards the Redding Shaft Mine. They will then continue on the Redding Ishkooda West Trail to the BMRR North, then the TCI Connector, then to the Redding Ishkooda East towards Grace's Gap. At Grace's Gap, runners will jump on the power line road and head back west towards the start finish. Runners will do three - 9 mile loops.
Cub Half Runners will do 1 full loop and one altered loop equaling 13.5 miles.
The course has a variety of single tracks, power line, and jeep track roads. Each 9 mile loop has an elevation gain/loss of 2200 ft making the total elevation change of 6600ft for the entire race.
Packet pickup will be on race day starting at 6:45 a.m. at Red Mountain Park. Contact Dan Ripple at email@example.com for more information.
