Welcome to LBL Trail runs

From the members of West Kentucky Runners Club, the people of Grand Rivers, KY, and the rangers from the Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area, Welcome!! to the 12th running of the Land Between the Lakes trail runs.
Thank you to the over 5000 runners who have supported LBL runs, and, for those of you considering running your first LBL, welcome to the family.

The Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area (www.lbl.org) is a wonderful place. You might see bald eagles in flight, or perhaps you'll want to visit the Bison and Elk area.
Plan on spending a little extra time at LBL

Please visit www.wkrc.org and click on the link for lots of information.

Course Overviews

The course starts at Lighthouse Landing, with the first 1.9 miles run on paved roads to the Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area, where the trail begins. This section should allow for separation of participants before entering the trail.

The Canal Loop trail (designated by blue markers on trees), is a scenic, well groomed 11.3 mile loop on mostly single-track between Kentucky and Barkley Lakes; offering many breathtaking views of the lakes, and several short challenging hills. (around 800' of gain/loop)
Depending upon the event, a runner will run 1 loop for the 23k, 2 loops for the Marathon, 3 loops for the 60k, or, for the 50 milers, 4 loops plus a short (.62 miles out and .62 miles back) on Kentucky Lake Scenic Drive before heading back via road to the finish line in Grand Rivers.

Trail shoes are recommended, but not necessary. All larger creek crossings have bridges, and the trail drains very well in the event of rain. (Snow and packed ice?... well, that's a different story. Fortunately this story is not told very often.)
Normal temperatures for the area are are 63/40.

Lodging - Camping

One of the beauties of LBL is its proximity to I-24 and Grand Rivers, KY. Its only 3.3 miles from I-24 exit 31 to Grand Rivers.

We highly recommend the two top-class resorts at Grand Rivers:

Lighthouse Landing - 320 W. Commerce St, Grand Rivers 270-362-8201, located on the shore of beautiful Kentucky Lake. These condos sell out first. www.lighthouselanding.com

Green Turtle Bay resort - 263 Green Turtle Bay Dr, Grand Rivers 270-362-8364, located one mile from the start/finish. Shuttle service available. Many amenities for you and your guest. 1,2,3, & 4 bedroom condos available, all overlooking Lake Barkley. 2 night minimum. Get some friends and family together and share costs. It's worth it. www.greenturtlebay.com

Grand Rivers Inn - 1949 JH O'Bryan, Grand Rivers. 270-362-4487 Located 1 block from the finish. Older, but clean rooms and a few cabins for rent. 2 night minimum. Very convenient.

If you're not staying in Grand Rivers, then definitely consider Pattis Inns & Suites. Located at I-24, exit 31(the Grand Rivers exit). Only 3.5 miles from the start finish. Very reasonable rates and even less if you tell them you're with the race. The manager, Ann Martin is a runner and really goes out of her way to make you welcome, including getting up early to have breakfast ready on race day. 270-928-2740

Special Needs/Drop Bags

Try to keep bags/boxes less than the size of a large shoe box.
Please clearly label your drop bag with your name and bib#.
Leave it at the designated area outside of the Community Center on the morning of the race.
We will take it to the aid station at the North Welcome Station

NOTE: when you are finished with your drop for the day, place it in the area marked "BAGS READY TO BE RETURNED TO THE FINISH AREA".
Doing this simple thing will mean that your bag will be at the finish in a timely manner.
Bags will be brought back frequently beginning around 9:30, and placed at the Community Center where they will be left overnight if not claimed in order to give those of you who forget, and then suddenly remember.

Unclaimed bags will be sorted through. Opened food and drink will be discarded. Unopened will be donated.
We will make every attempt to save and return valuable items to you if you have your name/bib # on the bag.

Drop Downs/Drop Outs

If you decide it's not your day and you'd like to run less than what you entered, you may do so by informing the official at the end/beginning of the loop. He/she will mark your bib# indicting the number of loops you complete.
Please tell the official at the finish line so we can record the proper finish distance, and give you the appropriate award.

In the unfortunate event that you cannot finish a distance, and need to drop out of the race, please notify the nearest course marshal or aid station attendant, who will see to it that you are returned to the finish line.
If you drop out and are picked up by family or friends, please stop at the finish and let us know so we can account for everyone.
