The 2015 Run for Kids Challenge
The 2015 Run for Kids Challenge will be held at Oak Mountain State Park, just south of Birmingham off I 65 in Pelham, Alabama. Take the Hwy 119 exit (Cahaba Valley Rd) from I 65 and follow the signs to Oak Mountain State Park. Check website for map and directions.
The races will start and finish at the Cedar Pavilion (same location as last year) at the far South end of Double Oak Lake, the swimming and canoeing lake. The pavilion is located at the end of Terrace Drive. This year the run will start on the Lake Trail heading clockwise around Double Oak Lake. About 2/3 of a mile around the trial runners will switch to the Rattlesnake Ridge trail and follow it all the way around back to the Cedar Pavilion. Each loop will be about 3.298 miles.
All three races will start at 7:00 AM. Race packet pickup and Late Registration will be open Friday afternoon from 4:30 to 6:00 PM at Mountain High Outfitters store located on Hwy 280 across from Whole Foods (2800 Cahaba Village Plaza, Suite 250, Birmingham, AL 35243.) Race Packet pickup and Late Registration will open again about 6:00 AM Saturday morning at the Cedar Pavilion (start/finish location) at Oak Mtn. State Park. Finisher awards will be given for all races.
There will be a cookout following the 50K and 12 Hour runs with hamburgers and veggie burgers. Remember 100% of proceeds go directly to Camp Smile-A-Mile. Additional donations would be greatly appreciated.
Oak Mountain State Park had a entry fee of $ 3.00 per person to enter the park on weekends. This fee in not included in the entry fee so please bring CASH to get into the park. The southwest entrance will be open Saturday Morning. This is the entrance just off I-65 at Hwy 119 (Cahaba River Rd.) The northeast Entrance does not open until 7:00 AM so if you go to it, you will miss the start.
By the way, There is a lot to do at the park. This is the largest state park in Alabama with 10,000 acres. Bring the family and enjoy the day hiking, swimming, canoeing, horse back riding or visiting the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center. The park also have a very nice camping area and cottages are available to rent on the "Old Lake." Here is a link to Oak Mountain State Park.
If you would like to run the 50K as a relay, please have each team member sign up for the 10K then send me an email listing the team members so I can switch them to the 50K. Each team member will receive a race shirt and a finisher award. At this time there is no award for the winning team. If in the future we have 4 or more teams competing we will give an award to the winning team.
