Hello Super C&O Canal Towpath Runners!
Fun running on the American treasure we know as the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal Towpath is coming up next Sunday 11/11. Mike and I look forward to seeing everyone run well and have fun on race day!
Race Start Time: The race start time for the marathon is 7:30AM. Wave one of the half marathon will start at 8:00AM and wave two will start at 8:30AM. Both waves of the half marathon are nearly full as of this writing and registration will likely close before the Friday 4pm cut off. There are still about 30 spots available for the marathon so tell your marathon buddies to get off the couch and come join you next Sunday! Please email Mike at email@example.com by Thursday if you have any questions about your distance or start time.
Packet Pickup at Road Runner Sports!
For packet pick up this year we are proud to be working with the great team at Road Runner Sports located at 1120 West Broad Street, Suite D, Falls Church, VA 22046. Come to the store from Noon until 5PM on Saturday, November 10th to pick up your race packet and to stock up on all your favorite running gear! All runners will receive a store discount on all purchases made during the packet pick up event. All runners are encouraged to come to the store next Saturday to pick up your packet to make your pre-race morning less busy!
If you can't make it to the store Saturday afternoon, race morning packet pickup will commence at 6:45 AM at the race start/finish.
Parking and Driving: Altis highly recommends that runners drive to the start/finish from DC and the Key Bridge heading west on Canal Road or Reservoir Road to reach the start/finish. Why? It is very difficult to make the 180 degree turn into the one lane driveway down to the race start/finish from Canal Road if driving to the race heading east towards DC. A good driving option for those of you driving to the race from the north or northwest is to get onto MacArthur BLVD NW and then turn onto Reservoir Road NW heading towards Canal Road and the start/finish. The entrance to the start/finish is easily seen from the intersection of Canal Road and Reservoir Road. If someone is dropping you off at the race and then leaving - or if you are taking an Uber/Lyft/cab ride to the race please consider being dropped off at the intersection of V St NW and Reservoir Road - use 4877 Reservoir Road NW Washington DC for the drop-off address - and walk down the road a quarter mile to the start/finish. Please use this address for pick-up after the race also. Since the race site entrance is a one way lane this will assist the traffic flow and would be greatly appreciated. Please consider being picked back up after running at this same address.
Miscellaneous: The start/finish is on the Towpath where the walking bridge crosses the canal. There are excellent restroom facilities at the start/finish. Runners pass this restroom at miles 4.5, 6.6, 11.1, 13.1, 17.6, 19.7, and 24.2. The best place for spectators to view the race is at the start/finish. The Towpath will be open to the public during the race. Please be respectful of other Towpath users. Course info is on the race web page. We are planning to have a drop station staffed by a volunteer this year where you can leave your keys/phone/etc. during the race and pick them up after you finish. Your bib # will be your claim check our staff will put your stuff in a clear plastic bag and write your bib number on it. Fruit, cookies, chips, candies, water and gatorade will be at each aid station. The race does not provide any energy gels. Thanks in advance to our great volunteers! Questions: email Mike and Frank at firstname.lastname@example.org. IMPORTANT - please email by Thursday if you want to switch from the marathon to the half - thanks! See you soon!
The C&O Canal Towpath is a wonderful place to run! Please join us if you would like to run a marathon or half marathon that is conducted completely in the District of Columbia.
Local time: 4:59 AM
The race web page is http://altisendurance.com/events/co-canal-towpath-marathon-and-half-marathon
There will be two half marathon start times since the National Park Service limits the number of starters at one time to 100. Half Marathon Wave 1 will start at 8:00AM, and Half Marathon Wave 2 will start at 8:30AM. The marathon starts at 7:30AM.
This race takes place in its entirety in Washington DC on the flat dirt and crushed stone surfaced C&O Canal Towpath. 3.28 miles of the towpath will be used for this event. Runners will head southeast from the start to the Francis Scott Key Bridge at which point runners will turn around and head northwest on the towpath. After running 3.28 miles northwest, runners will again turn around and head back southeast towards the start/finish line. Upon reaching the start/finish line runners will have completed a quarter marathon – or one course loop. Half marathon runners will run this course loop twice and marathon runners will run this loop four times in order to record finishes in their respective races.
