Big South Fork

Knoxville, TN 17.5 Miler, 10K

This Event Took Place Sat. Sep 29, 2012

About the race

Years ago when I was first asked to investigate the possibility of staging a trail race at Big South Fork, I never imagined what a wonderful race and event this would become. Now, as we prepare for our 20th Anniversary running on September 28, 2013, I'm as excited about it as ever. If you are a runner and a lover of the outdoors, this is the race for you! And this year we'll again offer a 10k trail run for those who are reluctant to try the full distance.

The 17.5 Mile course is challenging, of course, but not so tortuous that you can't find your rhythm and stride for long portions of the race. We start with around a half mile of pavement to get you going, followed by a little over a mile on a gravel road to let everyone spread out. After that, it's all single-track starting with a beautiful descent through the old Litton Farm. Three miles later we reach the Grand Gap loop, a 6.8 mile loop with gorgeous views of the gorge containing the Big South Fork of the Cumberland River. Following the loop, the 5 mile trek into the finish is highlighted by bluffs and a couple of ladders to climb near the end. The 10k course will be an out and back loop course that is primarily singletrack.

Post-Race is a great party with great food served before the awards ceremony.

Our numbers are growing every year and we usually have participants from 9 or 10 states. It's a great change of pace for the road runner and a great prep for a half-marathon, marathon or ultra.
