Philanthropy

The 1 Day for the K.I.A. 12 Hour Endurance Run is a fundraiser to create scholarships for the children of military service members who have been killed in action, missing in action, prisoner of war, or disabled due to duty. Our event and organization consists primarily of ROTC Cadets, The Ohio State University students, and veterans under the guidance of current and former military officers and fallen military families. 1 Day for the K.I.A. also serves to raise awareness regarding Ohio State Buckeyes, to include 920+ alumni, former faculty/staff, and family members of current students who have made the ultimate sacrifice fighting our nation's conflicts. Race Overview

The 1 Day for the K.I.A. 24 Hour Endurance Run serves as the primary fundraiser for the Living Legacy Scholarship. Held in April of each year, it is a traditional 24 Hour Endurance Run in that runners have exactly one day to cover as many miles / laps as they can around a short course. Our .711 USATF certified, paved loop meanders around the picturesque Oval – the large green space at the center of The Ohio State University's campus. As a tribute to the 920+ OSU alumni and others who have made the ultimate sacrifice, we outline our course with nearly 1,000 lanterns, each with the name of a fallen service member who had some connection to The Ohio State University.

We are also very proud to feature a medical team consisting of a medical professor and his students. This team remains on site for the entire 12 hours to provide physical adjustments in addition to any emergency care that may be required.

Relay teams of up to 4 individuals may also register.

Scholarship Fundraising

1 Day for the K.I.A. maintains a small team of "Sponsored Runners" (ROTC Cadets and/or 1DK Team Members) that we officially support and help gain sponsorships, donations dependent on miles ran that are 100% attributed to the scholarship fund. We feature these "Sponsored Runners" on our website and provide an online capability to secure sponsorships that does not collect credit card information. Ultimately, our team manually emails or calls their sponsors to secure the incurred donation after the event.

As this process is very man-hour intensive, we are unfortunately unable to provide this capability to all of our runners. We do not currently have the software infrastructure offered by larger philanthropies that automatically manage and safe guard credit card information of participants.

However, to those who wish to do additional fundraising for the scholarship, please do not take this as a sign that we do not appreciate your motives. Although we cannot officially support you and are not liable for your sponsorship agreements, we do have a recommended method to complete donations if you choose to pursue additional fundraising on your own. Upon emailing the race director with your inquiry, you will be provided with a document that can help build credibility in your search for sponsors and instructions on how to send in consolidated donations.

Thank you very much for considering doing additional fundraising--this is a very necessary cause. Please remember that 100% of any additional donations you make, not including your registration fee, are tax-deductible and will be attributed directly to the Living Legacy Scholarship. These donations can be made at 1dayfortheKIA.org/donate !

Virtual Runner

Can't make it to Columbus on April 9th? Register to be a Virtual Runner at http://www.1dayforthekia.org/virtual-runner/ !

Virtual Running offers the ability to support the Living Legacy Scholarship from afar. Included in your Virtual Runner packet will be your raceday bib, a raceday t-shirt, a 1DK commemorative bracelet, and other 1DK items. If you choose to sign up as a Virtual Runner you can run as much or as little as desired; we only ask that you share where your run takes you!

Registration Information

You may notice our race fee is higher than many other ultramarathons; this is done with the intent of growing the Living Legacy Scholarship through yearly races. Registration fees go directly towards operational costs of the race and 1 Day for the K.I.A. as an organization. Because we generate all the necessary operational funding from registration fees, 1DK merchandise sales, and operation specific gifts, we are able to attribute gifts of all other forms (corporate sponsors, sponsored runner sponsorships, and scholarship specific gifts) directly to the scholarship fund. For example, if an individual wishes to make a donation entirely to the scholarship fund, they are able to do so via the link provided on our website (www.1dayforthekia.org).

Course

Our event takes place around The Ohio State University's Oval - the massive picturesque green space at the center of campus. The broad, circular path will take you around the Oval to see and experience some of Ohio State's historic landmarks, including Thompson Library, Mirror Lake, and Orton Tower.

The .711 mile loop has a vertical elevation difference of 18 feet, making it THE FLATTEST course of its kind in Ohio. At nighttime, it is lit by lamps which provide adequate visibility. Headlamps are allowed and can provide additional visibility.

Runner Amenities

There will be one aid station located on the south side of Thompson Library.
We are able to provide:
- food and drink for 24 hours
- a highly capable team of medical personnel
- port-a-johns right off the course

If you are interested in bringing a personal tent, PLEASE LET US KNOW by contacting 1DKinfo@1dayforthekia.org. Tent space is limited and we are working with the university to get as much as possible. Finally, the race will conclude with a brunch held at Heirloom Cafe, directly adjacent to the Wexner Center for the Arts. If you plan on attending please RSVP by March 27!

Refund Policy

Refunds will be given until February 1st. The full order will be returned minus the registration fee of twenty dollars. After this date no refunds will be given, no exception.
