About

The Boston Light Swim has been a local tradition since 1907, and is the oldest open-water swim marathon in the United States of America. Participants begin the race in the water at Boston Light on Little Brewster and continue past George's Island and Rainsford Island, under the Long Island Bridge, around Thompson's Island, and finish 8 miles later at the L Street Bathhouse in South Boston.

This swim is perfect for individuals who would like to try a cold water ocean swim. Many swimmers in the past have used this swim to prepare for an English Channel crossing. The 8-mile swim is a non-wetsuit event.

Eligibility & Qualifications

Each swimmer must be 18 years old or older on the day of the swim.

Swimmers will be required to have swum the BLS in the past 2 years OR show proof of a long distance, open-water swim of at least 2.4 miles within one year of the event. Each swimmer should be able to swim a mile in under 37 minutes.

In addition to the eligibility requirements, each swimmer is also responsible for supplying his or her own support person and motorized escort boat with a marine radio (no rowboats, canoes, or kayaks allowed unless used as secondary support).

Each solo swimmer must have 1-2 support crew and they will be required to attend the pre-race meeting on Friday (someone on the escort boat to help you prepare for the swim, watch out for your safety, and help you with your feeding schedule).

No wetsuits will be allowed.

We will enforce cutoff times along the course as part of our safety procedures.

Swimmers must be at:
1. Rainsford Island (42.314433, -70.952067; +42° 18' 51.96", -70° 57' 7.44") within 2 hours of starting the swim
2. Long Island (42.309623, -70.974574; +42° 18' 34.64", -70° 58' 28.47") within 3 hours
3. Thompsen Island (42.322267, -70.998743; +42° 19' 20.16", -70° 59' 55.47") within 4 hours
4. At the finish (42.32862, -71.033295; +42° 19' 43.03", -71° 1' 59.86") within 5 hours.
(GPS coordinates are in both decimal and degrees/minutes/seconds)

We reserve the right to pull you from the race at these pre-designated points if you are not swimming quickly enough to meet these cutoff times but will review each situation on a case-by-case basis. The aim is not to penalize slower swimmers, but rather to ensure everyone’s safety.

There will be a 5-hour time limit on the course (the event will conclude at 1:30 pm).
