Trail Solutions Class 101

Oconee State Park, SC Trail Class

This Event Took Place Sat. Apr 26, 2014

Overview

Sustainable Trails Workshop

This one day workshop will cover low-impact natural surface trail design, construction, and maintenance. It will have a focus on long term sustainability, proper construction practices, and ease of maintenance. The first half of the day will be an indoor session with a power point presentation. After a lunch break the afternoon session is for outdoor field work. This will include a construction demonstration and hands on maintenance activates for the attendees.

Indoor Presentation
The indoor session will cover aspects of trail design and layout, with discussion on how to avoid erosion and user conflicts. It will give you a good working knowledge of what causes trails to erode through water and soil relationships. We will cover proper hand tool use and safety, trail corridor clearing, full bench cut trail, and how to build a turn. There will be a discussion on maintenance issues regarding well-designed and poorly designed trails. We will also discuss how to do a trail assessment and identify problems, along with techniques for rerouting and reclaiming damaged trails.

Outdoor Field Work
Your instructor will build a small section trail to show the steps of the full bench cut technique. Then participants will get to take part in some standard maintenance tasks on a local trail.
