Race Information

Runners will begin their day with a pre-dawn check in and bib pick up at the Kirkwood Mountain Resort-Sports Shop Timber Creek Parking Lot, and then board an awaiting luxury motorcoach for a swift one-hour ride during sunrise to the race's start line at the Strawberry Lodge in Kyburz.


Upon arrival, the High Sierra Ultra awaits. This alpine masterpiece of a trail race will take you on a one-way 50K or Trail Marathon adventure from Strawberry Lodge through the forests of the High Sierra that surround Lake Tahoe and finishing back at the jaw-dropping Kirkwood Resort.

High Sierra Ultra (Difficulty: Advanced)

Surface: Mostly fire roads, dirt roads, and challenging single-track trails

Course: Race course travels through the El Dorado Forest in the High Sierra. An overall rugged and remote trail race.

Sunrise And Sunset: 6:31 AM and 7:24 PM

Weather: Alpine Summer; Highs – 74 degrees / Lows 46 degrees. (This is a high altitude course; high exposure and weather patterns can change rapidly, please be prepared for all conditions, including thunder/lightening and rain.

Parking: Plenty of free parking is available for this event at the Kirkwood Mountain Resort-Timber Creek Parking Lot. Free included luxury motorcoach shuttle to the runner start line at Strawberry Lodge in Kyburz.

Race day registration is available, but please be prepared to pay via cash or check, and note race day registrations will be charged an additional $10.

Schedule - Saturday, September 4, 2021

5:00 AM — Runner Check-In and Bib Pick-Up at Kirkwood Resort. Kirkwood Mountain Sports-Timber Creek Parking Lot. Leave your vehicle here (plenty of free parking) and board our luxury motorcoach for a one hour ride with fellow runners to the race start line in Kyburz


6:00 AM — Motorcoach shuttle departs Kirkwood Resort


7:00 AM (approx) — Motorcoach shuttle arrives at the Strawberry Lodge in Kyburz. Restrooms available inside the lodge. Race briefing and Q&A with Troy. Runners choosing not to ride the included shuttle to the start line may pick up bibs here


7:30 AM (approx) — Race begins


7:30 PM — 12 Hour Cut Off/Race over at Kirkwood Resort

Course Information

Three fully loaded aid stations will be open throughout the course.

You may check-in a runner drop bag when you pick up your bib/shirt at Kirkwood Resort to be transported to Hay Flat, Caples Creek (50K only), or Carson Spur/Thunder Mountain Aid Stations.

TCTRUNS Staff and Volunteers will be available throughout the course to assist runners.

All intersections will be marked with signs, gypsum, and ribbons. Several portions of the course will be unmarked as there are no turnoffs.

This is an Alpine Endurance Run in a Wilderness Area. Please make special note of the following information:

All Runners are highly encouraged to carry the equivalent of 2 water bottles/camelback at all times.

Sunscreen/hats are highly encouraged to protect against heat exposure.

Runners should be prepared to run after the sunsets. Please bring a change of clothing for your drop bags and headlamps/other lights.

Warm clothes and protective gear is mandatory.

ATTENTION Trail Marathon runners you will be crossing through the Caples Creek at Mile 9.5. Please keep this in mind and plan accordingly, dry shoes/clothing can be checked to the Thunder Mountain Aid Station. There are fallen trees that can be used as a bridge, at your own risk, a few hundred yards in either direction from the marked crossing.

This is a wilderness course; please be aware of potential wildlife encounters; Rattlesnakes, Mountain Lions, Wild Boars, Bears, Mosquitoes, Skunks, Raccoons, Bees, Poison Oak, Etc.

We recommend all runners pick up their lights at the Carson Spur / Thunder Mountain Aid Station. Although the course time cut offs allow for plenty of daylight from here to Kirkwood, this is a very remote, long and rugged section of trail into Kirkwood.
