Rules

The South Carolina Beer Mile will follow the BeerMile.com standard rules* with only slight variation (race venue determines variation). These rules are the same for men and women.

Each runner will be required to have a Designated Driver/Handler.
Each runner drinks four (4) cans (or bottles) of beer and runs four (4) quarter mile legs (Race venue is a half-mile track. The race is two full laps with beer at the start line, at the half way point, start of the second lap, and at the half way point again).
Beer must be consumed before the lap is begun, within the transition area (10 meter section before the start/finish line and half way point).
Race begins with the drinking of the first beer within the last meter of the transition zone at the start/finish line.
Runners must turn the can or bottle upside down over their head before running to signify their can/bottle is empty.
Runners must drink canned or bottled beer that is 12oz (355 ml).
No specialized cans or bottles may be used. Wide-mouth cans or bottles are not allowed. Aluminum beer bottles are not allow.
Beer cans and bottles cannot be tampered with (no shotgunning or puncturing of the can). No devices to aid in quicker drinking are allowed (including but not limited to straws, nozzles, etc.)
Beer must be 5% Alcohol by volume. Hard ciders, lemonades and malt beverages are not allowed. Beer must be a fermented alcoholic beverage brewed from malted cereal grains and flavored with hops.
Cans or bottles must not be opened prior to the runner entering the transition zone, and must be opened by the runner only.
Runners that vomit before they finish the race must complete a penalty lap (quarter mile) at the end of the race (immediately after the completion of their 4th lap). The runner’s final time will be the 4 laps plus the penalty lap. Please note that vomiting more than once only requires one penalty lap.
Runners who vomit and do not complete the penalty lap will be listed as DNF (Did Not Finish).
