Course Description

Sands Main Street Prairie is a 2.15 Mile loop that is 100% wide trail with zero pavement or street crossings. The prairie is a gently rolling and beautiful space that offers wonderful views in such a small area.

From wild flowers, deer, hawks, and butterflies, to the Olympic ski jump in Fox River Grove, the prairie will not dull on the senses, and is a fantastic place to spend a day.

Families will have plenty to keep themselves occupied as well, with parks, the library, downtown Cary, and all the amenities you need within walking distance, and everything else no more than 10 minutes away in any direction.

The elevation change is about 55 feet ascent per mile, not pancake, not hilly, but enough, and matches well with the Ice Age Trail. See the course map for more detail. There are no rocks, no roots, and a mix of tree cover verse sun exposure that will help bring your training period to a close heading into taper.

Race Logistics

We will be on site at 0500. Sunrise is at 0557. You may need a headlamp for the start but shouldn’t need it long.

Packet pickup starts at 0515 and ends at 0555. Any late arrivals will still be welcome but will be processed immediately after the start.

Race start is at 0600 and will be a quiet start in respect to the neighbors bordering the prairie.

There is no timer, it’s not necessary. We will record your loops as you complete them.

The final loop to be counted will start at 1745 and all final loops must be completed by or before 1800. The race ends promptly at 1800. Any loop not completed by 1800 will not be counted. All persons must be off site by sundown as this is a public space.

Pack it out, pack it in. This is a zero plastic, as close to zero waste event as possible. We will try to be carbon neutral with 10% of profits going to the McHenry County Conservation district.

To determine a winner, if more than one person has completed the same number of loops, the runner who finishes their final loop first wins.

Runners can setup canopies and make themselves at home during the event but may not block the course or any through way.

We will be inviting musicians to come out and play acoustic sets by the aid station.

Flags will always be on the left with signs at intersections. Where the course overlaps, a secondary color will be used to clearly indicate course flow. You will never be more than 1k from the race start while on the course.

We will have one portable toilet per 25 entries.

The aid station will be staffed by seasoned ultra marathoners, friends, and family.

A map for parking will be provided and is a 5 minutes walk to the race start. Parking will not be permitted within the prairie lot.

The environment is relaxed. There are no shirts or swag but we will have an award for the runner completing the most laps.

There will be one primary aid station. Water and snacks will be provided but we do consider this more of a pot luck, bring your own calories, first aid, comforts such as chairs event.

A 10x10 canopy will be put up. Runners are welcome to drop bags.

I’ll keep this updated as planning comes together and to address any consistent FAQ.

The event will be rain or shine and will only be canceled should unsafe events such as lightning, extreme heat, etc. Refunds for event cancellation will provided less event costs that cannot be recuperated. Refunds will not be provided to participants who cannot make the event.

Anyone with questions, interest in volunteering, sponsorship, wanting to sign up as a musician, or for anything else is welcome to reach out to me directly. JeremyDBrizzi@gmail.com
