11 Years & Counting

2015 will mark the 11th year of the Capitol Peak races in Capitol Forest. These races are some of the oldest in the Pacific Northwest, laden with longstanding local pride and tradition, and in 2015 Rainshadow Running & Capitol Peak Ultras are joining forces to make both the Capitol Peak MEGA FATASS (January 17th!) and the Capitol Peak 50-mile & 55k something extra special. Capitol Peak and Rainshadow have a long history of friendship, collaboration, and camaraderie, and this year's event will be the Capitol Peak courses and race family traditions you've grown to love, with aid station support and a finish-line party in true Rainshadow style. We think it's an awesome, spring-time mix of the best of two ultra worlds, and we can't wait for April 26th!

The 50-mile will start at 6 AM, and the 55k will start at 8 AM. NO EARLY (OR LATER) START. All 50-milers must start at 6 AM, and all 55k-ers must start at 8 AM. The cut-off time for both distances will be at 7:00 PM, which gives runners a full 13 hours to finish the 50-mile, and a full 11 hours for the 55k. If a runner has not left an aid station by its designated cut-off time, they'll be asked to drop out of the race and return towards the start/finish at the Tacoma Trail Cruisers facility, for their safety, the safety of our volunteers, and to keep the race on schedule for our permits and plans.Specific aid-station cut-offs will be sent out to all registered runners via the pre-race email. PLEASE NOTE: There will not be an option to drop down from the 50 miler to the 55k once the race has started. [That's a Finish/Timing nightmare, and we'd prefer to avoid nightmares on race-day.]

Both the 50-mile & 55k are run on a mix of steep and runnable singletrack, through beautiful Capitol Forest and out to picture-worthy views of the surrounding snow-laden peaks and misty mountain valleys. There's a little something for everyone on these courses!

DNR WAIVERS & A NEW START/FINISH FOR 2015

Every runner will need to print, sign, and bring a DNR waiver with them to check-in on race-day. These waivers can be found on our website, via this link (just copy it paste it to a new browser window): http://www.rainshadowrunning.com/capitol-peak-50-mile--55k.html

COURSE & START-TIME UPDATE AS OF APRIL, 2015: Capitol Forest being the perpetual adventure it always is, there will be some changes to the start/finish and course, due to logging operations in Cap Forest. But we've undoubtedly found an awesome alternate start/finish area, and a new (even tougher!) course that will make this year's Capitol Peak a special occasion.

With 5200 feet of elevation gain in the 55k, and 7200 feet of elevation gain in the 50-mile, these courses will make you work. The 50-mile will have 8 aid stations, and the 55k will have 6 aid stations. With lots of lush, forested single-track, opening up to great views of the surrounding peaks and mountain valleys, and a combination of super steep and super runnable trails, this course has a little something for everyone!

For 2015's event, the Tacoma Trail Cruisers (TTC) have graciously allowed us to use their facility for parking and staging our start/finish area! Both the 50-mile and 55k start will be at the Tacoma Trail Cruisers (TTC) facility, located approximately 14 miles from The Governor Hotel in Olympia, along Sherman Valley Road (or coordinates 46.955854, -123.07906). The Tacoma Trail Cruisers property is at the base of Capitol Peak, along Sherman Valley Road. CLICK HERE TO MAP DRIVING DIRECTIONS.

PLEASE NOTE: NO CAMPING OR OVERNIGHT PARKING at Tacoma Trail Cruisers property the night before the race, and NO CAMPING AT MARGARET MCKENNY CAMPGROUND. There is camping at the Middle Waddell Campground, about 1 mile from TTC property (along Waddell Creek road - or coordinates 46.9389096,-123.0761108) . There is no registration for camping, but you will need a Discover Pass to camp at Middle Waddell. Also, we only have permission to use the Middle Waddell Campground and not the Margaret Mckenny campground where the event has been previously held. Middle Waddell campground is primitive campground where there is no electricity or water, so come prepared and keep in mind variable weather conditions in April. There is no registration for camping, but you will need a Discover Pass to camp at Middle Waddell.

Every runner who is also driving and parking a vehicle anywhere in Capitol Forest (that isn't the Tacoma Trail Cruisers start/finish) will also need a DISCOVER PASS visible on their dashboard. You can (and should!) pre-purchase these day or annual passes (we recommend the annual pass, if you don't have one already) via this link (again, just copy and paste it into a new browser window): http://www.discoverpass.wa.gov/

Every time you buy a Washington Discover Pass, you're supporting Washington State Parks. [Win-win!]
