The 2017 Run for Kids Challenge
The 2017 Run for Kids Challenge will be held at Oak Mountain State Park on May 6th. The park is just south of Birmingham off I 65 in Pelham, Alabama. Take the Hwy 119 exit (Cahaba Valley Rd) from I 65 and follow the signs to Oak Mountain State Park. Check website for map and directions.
The races will start and finish at the Cedar Pavilion (same location as last year) at the South end of Double Oak Lake, the swimming and canoeing lake. The pavilion is located at the end of Terrace Drive. This year the run will start on the Lake Trail heading clockwise around Double Oak Lake. About 2/3 of the way around the lake, runners will switch to the Rattlesnake Ridge trail and follow it all the way around back to the Cedar Pavilion. Each loop will be about 6 miles. There will be a cookout following the 50K and 12 Hour.
100% of race proceeds go to Camp Smile-A-Mile or the Seven Summits Foundation for Nepal earthquake relief. (You select which charity will receive you registration fee at checkout.) Additional donations would be greatly appreciated. Discount codes do NOT apply to Run for Kids.
Friday, May 5th, 4:30 to 6:00 PM - Packet Pickup and Late Registration at Mountain High Outfitters store located on Hwy 280 across from Whole Foods (2800 Cahaba Village Plaza, Suite 250, Birmingham, AL 35243.)
Saturday, May 6th, 6:00 to 6:45 AM Race Packet pickup and Late Registration at the Cedar Pavilion (start/finish location) at Oak Mtn. State Park. The Cedar Pavilion is located at the far south end of Double Oak Lake, the swimming and canoeing lake. Follow Terrace Dr. to its end and park in the large parking lot to the left. (DO NOT go up the Peavine Falls Road.)

Oak Mountain State Park had a entry fee of $ 5.00 per person to enter the park on weekends. This fee in not included in the entry fee so please bring CASH to get into the park. Runners MUST enter the park through the southwest entrance Saturday Morning, the entrance just off I-65 at Hwy 119 (Cahaba River Rd.) The northeast Entrance does not open until 7:00 AM so don't go there, you will miss the start.
By the way, There is a lot to do at the park. This is the largest state park in Alabama with 10,000 acres. Bring the family and they can enjoy the day hiking, swimming, canoeing, horse back riding or visiting the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center while you are dying! The park also have a very nice camping area and cottages are available to rent on the "Old Lake." Here is a link to Oak Mountain State Park.
If you would like to run the 50K as a relay, please have each team member sign up for the 10K then send me an email listing the team members so I can switch them to the 50K. If we have 4 or more teams competing we will give an award to the winning team.
