If you are looking for an epic adventure on the trails in January, you will not be disappointed. The Owyhee Mountains in Southern Idaho are spectacular this time of year, coming with the possibility of mud, snow, ice, and a wild horse sighting if you are lucky. We could be treated to anything from temps in the 40s with egregious mud to sub-zero, arctic conditions with wind and ice like you have never seen before. Come prepared and bring your good attitude and sense of adventure. You need to carry at least two water bottles or a hydration pack. This is not your fall road marathon that has fully stocked aid stations every mile. 50k and 20 mile runners are advised to bring traction devices and/or trekking poles, an emergency whistle, space blanket, headlamp, and knowledge of the course. The mission of the Wilson Creek Frozen 50k is to offer a unique, winter running experience on the stunning Wilson Creek trail system in January. Runners will traverse the Reynolds Creek gorge and summit Wilson Peak while braving the elements and enjoying the scenery and wildlife viewing opportunities. These trails showcase southwest Idaho at its finest. We aim to share in this beauty with outdoor enthusiasts during a time of year when most people are watching the weather from the warmth of their homes. If you are looking for an epic adventure, you will not be disappointed. The 10 M loop contains ~2200' of elevation gain and the 20 M loop contains ~4900' of elevation gain for a total ~7100' of elevation gain for the 50k. The 50k is a combination of the two loops. The 5 mile has 788' of elevation gain and is not too technical.
Pickled Feet Ultra Running reserves the right to deny entry into the race based on age (youth). To enter the 10 Mile, kids 18 and under must have parental approval (and possibly supervision if young or inexperienced enough); as a rule, we are not allowing kids under 18 to register for the 50k or 20 Mile. We know there are kids who could be exceptions to this exclusion. If you are one of those kids who wants to run the longer distances, let's talk.
Wilson Creek is located about 30 minutes south of Nampa, Idaho at the main trailhead on Wilson Creek Road off Hwy 78 between Marsing and Melba. 50k and 20 Mile start at 7:30 am; 10 mile starts at 9:00 am; 5 mile starts at 10:00 am.
Runner Check In
Packet pickup will be held the week of the race at a couple different sponsor locations (TBA - you will need to check the race website for this information). Race morning packet pickup will be available starting at 6:00 am. Your race numbers will not be included in your race packets. We will hand them out with timing chips on race morning when you check in at the start.
50k runners will complete an epic 20.3 mile loop, followed by the 10.8 mile loop.

This is a fairly easy and non-technical course, perfect for beginning runners or anyone else to try out a winter trail run.

Changing Races/Refunds: Once you have signed up for the race, no refunds will be given by either the race or by Ultra Signup. Sorry. However, you will be allowed to change races all the way up to race day; i.e. you sign up for the 50k when you were in great shape in September, but by January you have put on 20 pounds of Thanksgiving turkey and want to drop to the 10 mile. This is fine. You will not be refunded the difference. Just email firstname.lastname@example.org to change races. Likewise, you are welcome to increase in distance before the race start by paying the difference with a check and letting the race directors know of your awesome decision.
Changing Races Mid-Event: If you sign up for the 50k race and choose to discontinue at the 20.3 mile point, this will be considered a DNF. You may not drop down to a 20 mile finish mid-race. If you start the race as a 50k participant and do not finish 50k, you will not be listed as a finisher at any distance. If you are signed up for the 20 mile and are having a good day and want to continue, you may alert the aid station that you want to bump up to the 50k during the race.
Things to Consider
Things to Consider: Herds of wild horses populate the hills in the Wilson Creek area. Admire but steer clear of them. If you see horses and they appear to be alarmingly interested in your presence, you should make whooping Indian war cries, which has proven to dissuade parading horses. Don't ask how we know that. If you are lucky, you will see deer or foxes in the early morning hours. Bikers, hikers, hunters, horse riders, ATV enthusiasts - these are the people you may encounter on the trails on a Saturday. Some of the grades especially on the descent from Wilson Peak can be very steep and especially hazardous if icy and/or muddy. Be cautious. We would feel very badly if anyone injured themselves. This run is a VOLUNTARY, predominantly self-supported, possibly solitary venture chosen by you. Do not participate if you are not 100 percent responsible and capable of taking care of yourself for an extended period of time (1-12 hours) in variable weather conditions in rugged terrain. Do not participate in this run if you are not in reasonable physical condition to spend hours on the trail climbing and descending; likewise, know when to quit. If you are not in the proper physical condition to undertake the 50k, please check your ego at the trailhead and sign up for the 10 mile race instead. Remember, we are warning you that this is a very tough run, and you are making the choice to participate. There is a possibility that the trails and roads will be aggravatingly and unrunnably slick, muddy, and treacherous. We (Pickled Feet Ultra Running, race organizers, volunteers) are not responsible for costs associated with search and rescue or any costs associated with your injuries or death. Be smart, use common sense, and be safe out there. Bring your sense of adventure and your good attitude, and leave your whining at home!
