The Scenic Trestle Filled Course
The race web page is http://altisendurance.com/events/gap-trestles-marathon-and-half-marathon
Runners start on the Great Allegheny Passage at the Western Maryland Railway Station and head northwest on the trail. After crossing the Salisbury Viaduct runners turn around and head southeast on the trail for 6.56 miles to the southeast turnaround between Miller Run Road and Warrens Mill Road. At the southeast turnaround runners turn around again and head northwest on the trail back to the start/finish. The Half Marathon runners will finish their race upon reaching the start/finish at the Railway Station. Marathon runners will do another loop of the course to complete the marathon. Half marathon entrants will cross each trestle twice while the marathon runners will cross each trestle four times. The trail surface is a fantastic crushed stone surface which is great for running. The course map link below also shows the elevation profile of the course. The course is not flat, but the elevation change is gradual. The half marathon has about 1166 feet of gain and loss, and the marathon runners will experience about 2332 feet of gain and loss on the course.
This event takes place entirely in Pennsylvania on the outstanding Great Allegheny Passage. Runners will cross three trestles on the course – to include the 1908 foot long Salisbury Viaduct (pictured above) over the Casselman River Valley, the 910 foot long Keystone Viaduct, and the historic Wills Creek Bollman Truss Bridge.

Miscellaneous: The great Meyersdale Area Historical Society is opening the Railroad Station early at 7:00AM race day. Feel free to thank Dale for opening the station early for the race. There are two restrooms in the Station - a mens room and a ladies room. Outside the station next to the trail is a port-o-let. Halfers will pass the Railroad Station and port-o-let twice during the race, and marathoners will pass the port-o-let and Station four times during the race. There are no other facilities on this course. Runners are encouraged to leave a drop bag at the start/finish aid station or at their car (the parking lot is right off the trail) for access as desired. Feel free to pick up a friend's race packet at packet pickup. Runners entered in more than one Series race will pick up all their race packets at once. Let your friends know that they can still enter the race! The simple and scenic out-and-back course will be well marked. Mike made the course a little long last year (bad Mike), but this course is awesome and runners should expect a whole lot of fun on the accurately distanced course this year! There are currently 30 entrants in the marathon, and 15 entrants in the half. Before and/or after you run I recommend you check out the Railroad Station. The Flight 93 National Memorial is only 34 minutes from the race start/finish. If this side trip interests you please visit https://www.nps.gov/flni/index.htm This race is the second of the five Altis Mid-Atlantic Series events.
