Welcome poor soul to the 4th Annual Hell Hole Hundred! While each distance utilizes the same section of trail, each event offers up its own little slice of misery…and adventure!
ALL PARTICIPANTS GET AN EVENT PINT GLASS. IF YOU FINISH YOUR DISTANCE, WITHOUT DROPPING TO A LESSER DISTANCE, YOU WILL GET A CUSTOM SHIRT MAILED TO YOU.
All participants will have a place to camp Thursday night, Friday and Saturday night and have access to restroom facilities, but there are no shower facilities.
NEW for 2017: I have added a 211.9 mile event (Devil's Doorknob), 16.3 mile and a 60k night run (Friday night) and a 16.3 mile run on Saturday, June 3rd. Saturday morning will see the start of the 16.3 mile/60k/100k/100 mile events starting bright and early, Saturday at 7AM.
Devil's Doorknob, the punishing 211.9 mile event starts Thursday, June 1st at 6PM, El Diablo, the 140.6 mile beast starts Friday, June 2nd at 6PM. Participants of the Devil's Doorknob are required to have a crew of 2-3 people to assist the runner during the entire event...or until the runner drops out.
It takes 13 times around Jericho Horse Trail to complete the 211.9 miles.
El Diablo participants are required to do 2 loops around Jericho Horse Trail PRIOR to 7AM on Saturday.
Devil’s Doorknob and El Diablo participants will be required to wear a SPOT Gen 3 GPS Tracker. This will be provided to you prior to the event. This piece of gear is required to be on you at all times. It must be visible and not covered up. I am tracking each participant to ensure you are on course and not lost due to the very real possibility that you will hallucinate at some point during the event. Also, if you run into trouble, you can contact me with preset messages to let me know you are just not right and need some assistance. You crew can also help you out during the event. BUT at no time can they DRIVE you down the dirt roads. Once you get into a vehicle and move, you are disqualified from the event.
For the first 36 hours, Devil’s Doorknob is a SELF SUPPORTED EVENT. There will be water on the course, but no food until Saturday.
El Diablo participants are SELF SUPPORTED for the first 12 hours of the event. It is not required that you have a crew, but I would encourage you to have people that can assist you.
Water and Doc Scotts Electrolytes, Recovery Water RX will be placed at locations roughly 6 miles apart (Basically where the manned aid stations will be later in the event).
All runners are required to check in at the aid stations during the entire event. You MUST carry what you want to eat while out on the trail or have your crew meet you at locations along the route.
ALL EVENTS END AT 1300 ON SUNDAY WITH THE EXCEPTION OF DEVIL'S DOORKNOB. YOU PEOPLE FINISH AT 6PM!

Nothing Comes Easy...
Upon completing the required loops the 60k, 100 mile and 140.6 mile runners are sent back down the trail in reverse to make up any missing distance from your required loops. Distance will be computed prior to the start of the event and you will be informed of your distance via a sign at the start/finish area. Heading down the trail in reverse and then heading back to finish the event has proven to be one of the most difficult aspects of the race.
Time Frame, Awards and Stuff
Devil's Doorknob participants are given 72 hours to complete 211.9 miles. El Diablo participants are given 43 hours to complete 140.6 miles. 100 mile participants have 30 hours to complete 100 miles. 100k participants have 22 hours to complete 100k and 60k runners have 11 hours to finish 60k and 16.3 mile runners have 6 hours to complete the event.
If you complete your event within the time frame given, you are considered and “official” finisher and will be awarded your time and Finisher Coin. If you are running Devil's Doorknob, El Diablo or the 100 Mile event, you will be awarded the Finishers Coin along with a buckle if you complete the event in the given time frame.
Devil's Doorknob and El Diablo 140.6 mile winners will have special belt buckles commemorating the completion of the toughest foot race around.
Do not get caught littering on the trail. If you do…you are automatically DISQUALIFIED from the event. Period.
Do not argue with event staff! If they feel that you are unable to finish the event due to your physical condition, your pace per mile, you will have your bib removed and you will be pulled from the course. IF you choose to continue, you will be banned from ALL Eagle Endurance, LLC events..
The Trail and Use of the FMNF
All events take place within the Hell Hole Swamp located in the heart of the Francis Marion National Forest located outside Charleston, South Carolina.
The trail we run on is called the Jericho Horse Trail. It is an 16.3 mile loop through the forest. It consists of dirt fire roads, single track trail and double track trail. It is a flat trail that is unforgiving. Past participants found it difficult due to the fact that there are zero hills, little elevation change and when they were on the course, they didn't know when to walk.
How many loops around Jericho?
You will be told this evening of the event for El Diablo, 16.3, 60k night runners and morning of the event for all others.
Under no circumstance will refunds be issued, registrations be transferred to another person or transferred to a later date.
Information concerning Civil Rights and affiliation with the Francis Marion National Forest:
"In accordance with Federal law and U.S. Department of Agriculture policy, this institution is prohibited from discriminating on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, age or disability. (Not all prohibited bases apply to all programs.)The Hell Hole Hundred is operated under special use permit with the Francis Marion National Forest.
The Aid Stations for the Event (the course is one big loop around the forest):
• Start/Finish Line - Fully Stocked and supported
• Conifer Road (after crossing the concrete walkway around Nicholson Creek) – Water Stop Only
• Hwy 41 Trail Crossing – Fully Stocked and Supported
• Conifer Road (coming out of Turkey Creek) - Water Stop Only
• Yellow Jacket Road at Thomas Road – Fully Stocked and Supported
• Big Island Road - Water Stop Only
Water Stop Only Manned Aid Stations are roughly 6 miles apart as are the Water Stops
Running this distance is going to suck. The only reason I will cancel this event is if the forest is on fire, there is a hurricane and zombies are out on the trail. If for any reason the event has to be shut down due to extreme weather, natural disaster or zombies on the course (other than the runners…), you will be pulled from the course or held at an aid station until you can be removed from the course. Please, no arguing if this should happen. It is for your own safety.
Thursday evening I will have packet pickup for Devil's Doorknob runners, FRIDAY evening I will have packet pickup for El Diablo runners, 16.3 and 60k NIGHT runners from 7-7:30PM and for the remaining participants that are camping out Friday night from 8-830PM.
Local time: 9:58 AM
Morning of the event at the START/FINISH AREA (Jericho Horse Trail/Start/Finish area) from 6-6:30AM.
