100 Mile GPS Data:
All 100 Milers will be required to prove GPS data prior to picking up a pacer at mile 62.
If you do not pickup a pacer then complete GPS data is required to receive your buckle.
The only exceptions will be if you have run an entire section with another runner and both runners confirm this.

PART III - The Reaping
Scared yet? You should be!!!
This journey is one you'll never forget.
Don't be fooled by the near-zero elevation gain of Port Allen, Louisiana. This is going to be one of the flattest yet most brutal and challenging ultra courses around, and your legs will be tortured. Although not an easy course if you are looking to PR this race is made for you. 1st Year Winner Alan Abbs who has run over 120+ Ultras dropped 40 minutes of his PR!
We have created a course that is challenging, ever changing, and sure to excite all runners. You will experience some of the South's deepest history while running on the property of multiple sugar cane plantations. Well, isn't that cool? Whether you're running the 50k, 100k, or the 100-miler, we have some creepy, cool routes for each section.
-All 100-mile finishers receive a CHILDREN OF THE CANE Pewter buckle. Special 100 Miles - One Day as well:

Aid stations will be fully stocked with typical ultra foods and Louisiana specialties. Think BEST ultra race food ever. Fluids will be plentiful.
Altar of Sacrifice - Course
100k & 100mi - 6:00am
10mi, 20mi & 50k - 8:00am
ALL 100k & 100m Runners should Start with a headlamp and expect about 1 hour before the sun comes up.
50k Course: (1st 50k)
The 50k course consist of running a 10-mile Loop before returning to the main Aid Station. Next you will run 8-miles Stretch making your way to the 2nd Aid Station. Both of these stretches are within Margaret Plantation/Homestead Plantation properties. Head north to run down railroad tracks, along the bank of the Mighty Mississippi, weaving through private hunting trails behind the Mississippi River levee to find your way to the 3rd Aid Station over looking the Mississippi River at mile 25.
100k Course: (2nd 50k)
Both 100k and 100m runners will repeat the same route as the 1st 50k.
100m Course: (Last 37.86m)
Runners will start the last 38 miles by running the 1st 10-mile Loop and returning to the Main Aid Station at mile 72. Next runners will head on a true out and back totaling 19.45 miles starting east 2.5 miles making there way to the Levee Top across the river from Baton Rouge and then travel north 7 miles on the levee top all the way to the 3rd Aid Station at mile 82. Turning around and traveling back to the Main Aid Station at mile 92 runners will then start the same 8-mile Stretch from the 50k and 100k and run it to the FINISH!
Accountability: Runners are required to check-in and Check-out of each Aid Station. It is the responsibility of the runner to make sure the Aid Station accounted for there where-a-bouts. The course has plenty of areas for the unhonorable runner the cut time and distance. This race relies on the honor code; should a runner advance along the course at a abnormally fast rate between Aid Stations the Race Director has the right to Disqualify the runner. Should a runner decide to cut their journey short they must notify an Aid Station or Race Official before sleeping for days; failure to do so also could result in Disqualification.
Course Markings: Sections will be marked either RED, YELLOW or Orange Landscape Flags and turns that need indicating will have NEON Pink Arrows pointing the way.
Mile Markers: Will be placed every 5 Miles i.e. 5,10,15, 20 (Use the markers for rough estimate of distance.)
The WORD - Cutoffs / Limits
50k, 100k and 100m will all have cut off times but if someone is close to the finish the Race Director has the Sole Discretion to allow the runner to Finish Unofficially.
50k - 12 hours

The CHILDREN - Volunteers
We will have a fine staff of "The CHILDREN" stalking and terrorizing you throughout the race…oh wait, I meant they will be waiting on you hand and foot at every aid station! Keep in mind that most people you will encounter on at Aid Stations and along the course are Volunteers and have given freely of their time to wipe your nose, fill your bottle and heal your nasty blister and chaffing bodies; so be nice! If you are mad at anyone be mad at yourself your asking to be tortured!

100 Mile Relay (3 - 6 People)
New for 2016: 3 Person and 6 Person Relay Teams!
Challenge your friends to see how fast your team can complete the 100 mile course!
Total Miles varies for Relay participants:
3 Person Teams from 32-38miles.
6 Person Teams 15-20miles.
-Racers switch off at every aid station passing.
-Racers will have to transport themselves to different aid stations.
-SUPER close Aid Station!
-Main Aid Station to Aid 2 is less then 1 mile!
-Main Aid to Aid 3 you about 3.3miles!
-No need for renting a van or all that nonsense!

If teams have a runner that has to drop due to injury then that team can still continue as long as one of the runners or runners on the team run the legs.

Details: When traveling from Hwy 1, take a left on Lafiton Lane/Hwy 987, travel about 1.5 miles, when you see a trailer park on the right, look to your left and take a left into the cleared rock parking area surrounded by Sugar Cane. Park and follow the signs to the Start/Finish.
If you are traveling from out of town and are not able to make Friday Night then you will need to arrive between 4:45am and 5:15am to get you bib, packet etc.

Crew / Pacers / Drop Bags
Crew? You don't need no stinking crew! But if you feel like you want some familiar faces on the course then please have them volunteer.
Pacers: Pacers will be allowed for the 100-mile runners only, starting at the beginning of the 19.45 Mile Levee Section This will require the pacers to run 28 miles; so make sure your pacers are badass as well.
Drop Bags: Please make sure your bag is labeled with your NAME & DISTANCE and limit your gear to one large duffel or plastic bin.
Start/Finish DROP= You will see this area at 10m, 50k, 41m, 100k, 72m, 92m.
FORGE/Aid Station 3 DROP= You will see this area at 25m, 55m, 82m.
Aid Stations & Water Drops
Main Aid Station is the Start/Finish:
Distances 10m, 50k, 42m, 100k, 72m, 92m
Aid Station 2:
Distances 18m, 30m, 49m, 61m
Aid Station 3:
Distances 25m, 55m, 82m
Food at Aid Stations: potatoes, broth, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, turkey, cookies, chips, chocolate, skittles, bananas, pineapples, salt, flour tortillas, cheese, honey, bacon, eggs, crackers, powder donuts, sweet potatoes, squash, zucchini, M&Ms and more.
Hydration: water & Tailwind are the primary sources for hydration. About 120 Clif Gels will be available (vanilla & raspberry). Limited Heed, Endurolytes and Endurolyte Fizz and some gels. COFFEE…Yay!
Water Drops: You will be no further than 5 miles from water at anytime. In 2017 we added 4 water drops and all of these are 3-5 miles from before and after all aid stations.
Tent Camping / Hotels
Tent Camping: Available for Friday and Saturday Night at a rate of $15 per tent. An area to shower (Cold Water) and clean off will be available but will be outdoors and nothing fancy.
NO Refunds or Rain Checks or Transfers to Other Runners will be available.
However, If you should desire to drop down in distance you may do so up until one month prior (September 3rd) to the race date.
If you decide to drop in distance while racing you will be counted as DNF for the distance you registered. Thanks for your understating.
Louisiana weather can be up and down / left and right… but here are the averages for this time of year;

Humidity: Avg 50% (Low for La)
Rain: This is normally the driest month of the year!
Sun Rise: 6:59am Sunset: 6:49pm (Length of Daylight 11:48:32)
This course is very flat yet will be very challenging. What to expect greatly depends on the current weather conditions.
Some things to dream about…
-Soft Ball size chunks of dirt from grating tractors.
-Holes knee deep from tractors driving in to rain.
-Up/Down, Up/Down etc running over the top of rows of cane.
-High Growth Sugar Cane; can be sharp and will leave you smiling for days!
-Powdery dirt that floats and blows with the wind.
-Whole Fields on fire to burn the foliage off the cane.
-Rock roads on the Levee top.
-Mud for Days; if it rains…and I hope it does, the course will be the toughest race in the World…think 10% Finish Rate!
-Head Lamps: All races 6:00am starters should prepare for a full hour of darkness.
-Hydration Minimum: 2 Bottles or bladder totaling a minimum of 48oz.
-Sunscreen, Sunglasses & Hat: Very little shade in Sugar Cane Fields.

"This race is held in a place that makes me feel relaxed and free. The cane rows are majestic and full of energy. It is peaceful and beautiful. Aid stations were helpful with the best foods and snacks and helped me change socks and shoes several times. They even brought my specialized ice chest and had it for me ready at two aid stations. I plan on doing both these races every year until I retire from running. Variety of scenery from Sugar Cane Fields and running along the banks of the Mississippi River to running down railroad tracks and rutted up field rows. Alter Of Sacrifice - New Course:
-With the rains over the last week and the conditions of the fields at the beginning of this week we had to make a call and edit the course. We are excited that the new course offers runners much of the old course with a simpler to navigate Out & Back format. The new course will also allow runners to pass back and forth with other runners.
The Course Explantation:
2 Sections totaling 31.08miles/50k
1 - 10mi Out & Back (5 miles each way)
2 - 21mi Out & Back (10.53 each way)
START/FINISH is covered up by the 10mile marker.
(White/Blue Cross) represents AID Stations and the (1&2) represents each particular stations.
What Parts Do I Run?
10mi: runs only the 1st section.
20mi: runs the 1st section and then 5 miles out and back of the 2nd section.
50k: runs both sections.
100k: runs both sections 2 times.
100miler: runs both sections 3 times and then will run 3.43miles out and back of the 2nd section.
AS-1: Miles 0, 10, 31, 41, 62, 72, 93, 100.
AS-2: Miles 16.5, 25, 47.5, 56, 78.5, 87.
(Blue Drop) represents water only. Every 3-4mi!
(RXR) represents a railroad and state highway crossing that is unmanned...use extreme caution!
Relay Team Only Info:
The (X) represents Relay Team exchange points...
Leg 1: 5mi. Leg 2: 6.5mi. Leg 3: 8.61mi. Leg 4: 6.20mi. This is for each 50K. 4 Legs per a 50k so 12 legs plus a last 6.80mi.
Aid Station Stock:
Food: potatoes, broth, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, turkey, cookies, chips, chocolate, skittles, bananas, pineapples, salt, flour tortillas, cheese, honey, bacon, eggs, crackers, powder donuts, M&Ms and more.
We will have some mix of gels, blocks and other nutrition products.
Hydration: water, coke, ginger ale, beer and more. COFFEE at AS-1…Yay!
Also, recommend you bring your own preferred hydration as we don't know what you like. Also, unfortunately, we have limited tailwind and salt tablets. Please plan accordingly!
TruBlue Water Drops:
-You will have 10mi stretched between Aid Stations at different times on the course but you won't be longer then 3-4 miles with out water thanks to TruBlue Water out of Baton Rouge...thank our good friend local runner and winner of the 2016 COTC 100 Miler, Jason Cheek, in 19:45.

-WE ARE NO RESPONSIBLE FOR LOST ITEMS, CONTENTS GETTING WET OR DAMAGED. We will do our best to keep it dry and safe but no you are giving us your bag at your own risk. Also, consider putting the contents in large ziplocks in case of heavy rains.

Out & Back Proof Required: when you arrive at the turnaround of each out&back you will find an ice chest, trash bag, an instruction sheet and 3 hole punches. The instruction sheet will provide details of what punch to use to punch you bib per what lap. These will be checked when you return to each aid station.
-Head Lamps: With some races starting at 6:00am it will be dark for a full hour.
-Hydration Minimum: 20 oz handheld water bottle.
-Sunscreen, Sunglasses & Hat: Very little shade in Sugar Cane Fields.
Allowed for the 100 mile runners ONLY, starting at mile 62.

Lastly, some will ask, some will cry and some will plead as to why they must quit and finish before reaching their goals...my answer will always be no, go back out there. You can not drop distance at COTC or any of my races. DNFs are alive and living at my races. I will actually give you a DNF Key Chain. You will hate me for a minute. That's on you not me. One day you'll agree it may have been the best learning experience of your life. Why would I steal that from you? Why would I give you a finisher medal for not finishing what you set out to do? To make you feel warm and fussy? Nope...not at my races. If it is not your day...so be it! Quit if you must or battle until it is your day. Go back out there and keep moving...I know you can!
