Description

IMPORTANT NOTE REGARDING COVID RESPONSE:
HUFF 50K Trail RUN is a LIVE Event.

The HUFF 50K has a safety plan approved by the County Health Officer. The County is currently in an orange status and the plan will cover the number of participants we expect on December 19th at Chain O' Lakes State Park.

In the event that the County goes to a 'red' status we believe the current number of participants (as of November 23) can be accommodated in a live event. Those registering after this date may be affected if the County is in a red status by race date. Please be aware that those registering after this date may be assigned to a 'make-up' date as soon as the coronavirus situation abates or you will be deferred to next year.

We will strive to keep everyone advised as this situation develops.

Due to the need for safety precautions there will be several changes to the event. We are gratified by the expressions of understanding that we have received thus far. Trail runners want to run trails. We are doing what we can to serve that desire in this unprecedented year.

So, first is that the start will take place at the TOP of the hill before one descends the drive to Sand Lake. This location is near the two main parking areas and will allow runners to remain in their vehicles until 5 minutes before the start. It goes without saying that masks are required for the start, when you approach an aid station, and when you finish.

Remain socially distanced the entire time before the start.

THE START TIME FOR THE 50K is still 8 AM. THE START TIME FOR THE ONE LOOP AND THE RELAY is 9 AM or potentially 9:30 AM We urge One Loopers not to enter the park until a later time after the start of the 50K.

BIG CHANGE FOR RELAY: RELAY RUNNERS will all START TOGETHER with the ONE LOOP RUNNERS. The times of the team members will be added together for finish times. We have joked over the years that there is only one hard and fast rule of The HUFF - and that is the relay teams must run a real relay with alternate legs. This may be the one year for the exception to that rule!

Packet pick up is likely to be a very fast affair, single file, socially distanced and close to your vehicles. We are still working on the logistics and will keep you advised.

Aid stations will have individually bottled water and a multitude of individually packaged pretzels, M&Ms and the like. You keep safe and keep the aid station folks safe.

Food service at the end is something for which this race is known. However, this year's circumstances make that impossible to do in a safe way for our runners or volunteers. Expect to get an individually wrapped meal with individually packaged items. Cold beverages and water will be in individual containers. Hot beverages will be dispensed and then placed on a table for you to pick up. Do not congregate. We expect folks to disperse and to leave quickly after the event.

The tents will be smaller and heat may not be as robust so as to keep air flow within the spaces. We urge you to make a plan as to how you may use vehicles to remain warm. Make a plan if you travel with others to avoid any of you being subject to carbon monoxide poisoning if one is staying in a running vehicle. We are quite serious.

SO, THE ABOVE IS THE PRELIMINARY ADVISORY CONSISTENT WITH OUR SAFETY PLAN.

Be safe, stay tuned to your email for updates.

Packet Pick-up

We will be advising on any changes to packet pick-up due to our COVID safety discussions. Will advise registrants of changes.

The following is the original language:
Runners arriving out of the area on Friday may pick up their packets on either Friday in downtown Columbia City IN at Running Around Screen Printing OR Saturday morning at the Main Tent at Chain O' Lakes State Park.

Running Around Screen Printing prints the HUFF t-shirt. JoAnn Bird and her crew are located in a historic brick building just a block west of the beautiful Whitley County Courthouse Square. The address is 227 W Van Buren Street, Columbia City, IN 46725

The Friday night packet pick-up at Running Around is from 3 pm to approximately 7:30 pm.

Runners wishing to fuel up and enjoy a bit of camaraderie before Saturday's adventure have an opportunity to enjoy Indiana craft beer in downtown Columbia City at Chapman's Tap Room located one block east of Running Around Screen Printing's location.

Additional description

One of North America's best known ultramarathons. Also includes a 3-person 50K Relay and a One-Loop Run(11 Mile). The trail is easy enough to be a good first-time trail course; technical enough to give an advantage to seasoned trail runners.

Overall men's and women's winner of the 50K receive a large, engraved, Indiana specialty trophy of very thick, translucent art glass by the oldest art glass manufacturer in the US.

All runners must be finished by sundown (approximately 5 pm)
