Message to HURT 100 Entrants Regarding COVID-19

The HURT Board of Directors is closely monitoring the COVID-19 situation. Current restrictions and social distancing guidelines have affected all of us. The health and safety of our runners, crews, volunteers, friends, and families are paramount as we plan for the upcoming HURT 100 in January 2021.

The HURT Board has established criteria to guide our decision making regarding the HURT 100. To hold a successful, world class event that protects all involved, we will not hold the registration and lottery until we have some confidence that the following criteria will be met:

- Hawaii mandatory 14-day quarantine for arriving visitors must end
- Hawaii, California, Tokyo, and Canada stay-at-home orders cancelled
- Hawaii businesses, especially hotels and restaurants, are open
- Lifting of State of Hawaii restrictions on use of trails
- CDC Travel recommendations for no non-essential travel are lifted
- The US/Canadian border closure be reopened
- Airline capacity to Hawaii be back to near normal levels

Planning for an event such as HURT is a long-term process. In addition, we recognize that our mainland and international runners must plan training, travel, and accommodations in Hawaii many months in advance. We are committed to giving you as much notice as possible should the status of the HURT 100 change.

HURT Entry and Lottery Changes

As interest in the HURT100 continues to grow year over year, we have decided to make some changes to the entry requirements and lottery process.

THE REQUIREMENT FOR A 50 MILE OR GREATER QUALIFIER IS WAIVED FOR HURT 100 IN 2021. This requirement will return for HURT 100 in 2022.

There will be three separate lottery categories, with three separate lotteries.
* HURT Veterans
* Wait Listed / Never HURTers
* Everyone Else

We feel these categories continue to give our long-term veterans an opportunity to run, while making sure those who are perennially stuck on the Wait List get an increased opportunity.

HURT Trail Work Requirement

HURT will require eight (8) hours of volunteer trail work service from each participant.

THE REQUIREMENT FOR 8 HOURS OF TRAIL WORK IS WAIVED FOR HURT 100 IN 2021. This requirement will return for HURT 100 in 2022.

Trail work service must be performed between September 1 of the year prior and November 15 of the year preceding the event, a 14-month window. Those not submitting an approved trail work form by the deadline will be removed from the event and a partial refund given, as described in the Book of HURT.

For the 2021 HURT100 event, the service window will be from 9/1/19-11/15/20.

Guidelines for completing the trail work are listed on the HURT 100 website, available here.
