Race Information

Welcome to the Mt Diablo Trail Run. Pacific Coast Trail Runs is proud to bring back this classic in PCTR lore. For those seeking the ultimate challenge in elevation gain, then this event is for you. Enjoy ever-changing views and terrain on "Devil Mountain" with sweeping panoramas from the summit and highest point in the Bay Area. On a clear day, you may be blessed with heavenly views for hundreds of miles of California landscape. The trail cuts through meadow-lands to sedimentary rock formations carved out by water and wind, to the rocky summit. For those entering the 50K, you will get to enjoy the journey to Rock City and two different ascents of Mt Diablo and 8,500 feet of elevation gain. We have purposely picked the summertime, thus making the ultimate mountain challenge in the east bay and perfect for heat training for longer distance events you have later in the summer.

Entry Fee:
50K:
$75 (Early Bird), $85 (March 1st), $95 (April 1st) $105 on Race Day if not sold out.
28K:
$60 (Early Bird), $70 ((March 1st), $80 (April 1st)) $90 on Race Day if not sold out.
Half Marathon:
$55 (Early Bird), $65 ((March 1st), $75 (April 1st)) $85 on Race Day if not sold out.
10K:
$50 (Early Bird), $60 ((March 1st), $70 (April 1st)) $80 on Race Day if not sold out.

All entrants will receive a race shirt of the size and style they choose if registered by May 12th. At check-out you will have a choice between a Sport-Tek "tech shirt" or Next Level branded "cotton blend shirt". All participants will be able to enjoy the post race bbq with the one ticket provided with entry. BBQ Starts at 10:30am. Purchase additional tickets for friends and family $10 at check out. Protein and vegetarian options are provided. We like doing taco bars and other traditional BBQ fare with salads for the summer.

Parking Alert:
Parking is $6. Please do your best to bring exact change to allow for expedient entry for all. Please note that there is one lane in and one lane out of the parking area. We have staggered the start times to allow for traffic back-up getting into start/finish location.

Alcohol Alert:
Alcohol is prohibited in Mt Diablo State Park.

Woof Alert:
Dogs are not allowed to hike, walk, or run in this park. They are allowed in the campgrounds but must be on leash at all times. Please do not leave your dog in the car during this event.

If you pick up your bib and shirt but do not feel like running on Saturday Morning, you do need to let us know for safety reasons. Search and Rescue is very expensive and we would not like to send you the bill for not letting us know you didn’t start the event.

Race Day Check-In:
6:45am - 8:15am: All runners are required to check-in regardless of whether you picked up your bib number the night before.

Course Information

Course Design: Locals Lisa Hughey and Harris Mason

The course for all 4 distances will start at Mt Diablo State Park via the Mitchell Canyon Visitors Center. The 50K, 28K, and Half Marathon will all ascend to the top of Mt Diablo near Summit Road. The 50K'ers will get to unique climbs and be tested with 8,500 feet of vertical gain. Very few 50K's in the United States are comprable. However, if you chose a shorter distance, don't worry as you will also be able to climb a respectable amount of elevation. The course is a blend of the original PCTR course design with a few modifications. Bragging rights for all no matter which distance you choose.

50K'ers will once again get to run out to Rock City and circumnavigate the North Peak out to Marsh Road.
28K'ers will be challenged with 5,200 feet of vertical gain and also get to enjoy the venture around North Peak.
Half Marathoners will enjoy 3,600 feet of gain up to the summit of Mt Diablo and finish with the popular Bald Ridge.
10K'ers will feel all of the 1,800 feet of gain up and around Bald Ridge.

Course Markings:
We use different colored ribbons attached to clothes pins for all distances. Foot level signage including directional arrows will also be used to help differentiate turns for specific distances.

Aid Stations, Drop Bags & Pacers or Companions

Aid Stations:
We will provide a variety of fresh fruit, sweet & salty snacks, electrolytes sports drink, cola, ginger ale and water. THIS EVENT WILL FEATURE HIGH TEMPERATURES AND ALL ENTRANTS IN THE 50K distance will be required to have a hand-held bottle or hydration pack when they leave Rock City Aid Station. It is highly recommended that ALL runners carry at least 20 oz. of water between aid stations.

Drop Bags:
Runners in the 50 km may leave a drop bag at Rock City Aid Station. All runners may leave drop bags at the Finish Area of Mitchell Canyon Start/Finish area with any personal needs. Please note we will provide an area and do our best to safe guard them. We will not be responsible for the loss of personal items due to theft or misplacement.

PACERS or COMPANIONS:
50K - Pacers (only one permitted the entire event) are allowed in the 50K and can join their runner only at Rock City A/S.
28K - Pacers or Companions are not allowed in other distances unless permission is granted from Race Director.
1/2 Marathon - Pacers or Companions are not allowed in other distances unless permission is granted from Race Director.
10K - Pacers or Companions are not allowed in other distances unless permission is granted from Race Director.
Safety is our number one priority and want you to get home to your loved ones. Second is the amount of fun you have, so make it count.

Shirts & Awards

SHIRTS:
All participants that register by May 12, 2017 will be guaranteed their requested shirt size and material. Those registering after May 24th, 2017 will not be guaranteed a shirt. We will order extra shirts based upon previous race data and relative entries. All race day registrants will most likely not receive a shirt. However, if you stay around until the end and we have extra then you may receive a shirt.

Shirt Material Choice:
We have found not everyone will be happy with shirt style, material, sizing, or even the art. For our events, we can only solve the the issue with those requesting the type of material in shirts. During registration you will be asked what type of shirt you would like and then you size. To help you with your decision making process, we can tell you the "Tech-Material" (not cotton) shirts are made by Sport-Tek and generally run true to size. If you select "Cotton Blend", we can tell you they are a high quality shirt made by "Next Level" and tend to be more fitted than loose like other all cotton shirts.

AWARDS:
All finishers will receive a finishers medal similar to the ones in the above photo. These are called woodalions and made of recycled wood. These are made by the same company that makes the finishers medals for the Boston Marathon.

Top 3 Winners:
Top 3 Male & Female Overall Winners in each distance will win dollar value race credit for future Pacific Coast Trail Runs events.

1st Place - $75 race credit towards future 2017 PCTR Race
2nd Place - $50 race credit towards future 2017 PCTR Race
3rd Place - $25 race credit towards future 2017 PCTR Race

Age Group Awards:
Each age group winner will receive a special 2017 Age Group Medal. Age Group Award Winners include Top 3 Male & Female in each of the following age group categories:

Post Race

It is of importance that our participants hangout and enjoy post race relaxation and enjoyment. We will host a specially prepared post race BBQ with a variety of protein, even vegetarian options. We will announce the menu as we get closer to the event. Unfortunately, Mt Diablo State Park prohibits alcohol at our event. Community is an important reason we do this. Trail Running friends bring out the best in all of us. Please bring a change of clothes to be comfortable as we celebrate the finishers together.

Records & Timing

Timing is kept by Ultrasignup. Ultrasignup is an app that we use to manually enter your time based upon pacific standard time. We understand some competitors value seconds off their time and will make adjustments outside of top three overall winners and all age group winner in seconds for those that have GPS data, other factual proof, or logic to support their claim.
