RunforAmma... And Ellen

The RunforAmma ultramarathon is an annual event to help raise awareness and money to aid in cutting edge research and alternative treatments for cancer. The race is run through some of the best trails in the Open Space Preserve system of the Peninsula and South Bay Area.

This year the focus will be raising funds for spinal cord injury awareness and the purchase of a road racing wheel chair for Ellen Pavitt, Peggy Alfred's sister. Ellen was injured in a single engine plane accident in April 2015 and is now a paraplegic. She is an avid lover of all things outdoors and has always had a passion for hiking and adventure.

A spinal cord injury (SCI) is an injury to the spinal cord resulting in a change, either temporary or permanent, in the cord's functions. Common causes of damage are trauma (car accident, gunshot, falls, sports injuries, etc.) or disease. The spinal cord does not have to be severed in order for a loss of function to occur. Depending on where the spinal cord and nerve roots are damaged, the symptoms can vary widely, from pain to paralysis to incontinence.Spinal cord injuries are described at various levels of "incomplete", which can vary from having no effect on the patient to a "complete" injury which means a total loss of function. An injury at the level of the neck can cause permanent (quadriplegia), and lower injuries can cause paraplegia.

Runners who donate $100 or more to the cause will be invited to the RunforAmma dinner party after the race.

The Route

The run will feature running on the beautiful trails of the Santa Cruz Mountains. We will run through Monte Bello OSP, Skyline OSP, Russian Ridge OSP, Portola Valley Trails, Windy Hill OSP and Coal Creek OSP. Each of the run distances have a safe and easily accessible pickup/drop-off location with place to park and wait with other runners and crew.

Course maps and GPX files are available on the race website at runforamma.com/route. We will follow well known trails in the above mentioned preserves. If you will run with a smartphone or nav unit, download the GPX file of the route before the race. There will also be printed maps available at each of the aid stations.

Supporting the Cause

Everyone involved in the RunforAmma is a friend of someone who is affected by cancer (it may even be you). My hope is that you are a survivor and that you will join us to celebrate life and love that is meant to be shared. Everyone has memories to share; we can remember our loved ones and honor them with this day of running.
