Cayuga Trails

105 Enfield Falls Rd

Ithaca, NY 50 Miler, Marathon

This Event Took Place Sat. Jul 21, 2018

What you'll get....

Entrants will get to run a beautiful course supported by amazing volunteers, post-race food from Fitnell Catering, and Beer from either South Hill Cider or Ithaca Beer (while quantities last), and a post-race Specialized Purist finisher's bottle.

For those who register before March 30th you'll also receive a tech shirt made in NY by Royal Apparel (no shirt or correct size guarantee for those who register after April 15th), and Deluxe event bag from Boco Gear.

Prizes from sponsors - if we get some in and in the form of logo cards will be scattered throughout the course in lieu of traditional age group / podium prizes. Most importantly and lasting is the hope that we'll all get to spend a pretty fun and memorable day together on the trails!

Portions of each entry will go to support the Finger Lakes Land Trust, Finger Lakes Trail Conference, and State Parks Heritage Trust for local trail and park projects. We'll again be a cupless event. If you don't already have one, or lost in in the interim, and need one, you'll have the option to add one to your entry for $5 (cost). I realize the cupless format is a pain for some but hopefully you get the benefit.

Course general description

Cayuga Trails uses an out-back C-shape course configuration w/ a lollipop loop on the far end. The out-back configuration was chosen secondary to the FLT extending onto road and fairly unremarkable sections beyond each terminus. The result has allowed entrants to have the opportunity to see the race shaking out ahead and behind them in several points.

It starts and ends in Robert H. Treman State Park where it ascends the gorge trail, passing through the Lucifer Fall's area in the upper gorge and the Finger Lakes Runner's Club's Old Mill AS, before wrapping out/connecting with/descending on the Finger Lakes Trail. Once clearing the Binghamton Area Trail Runners Underpass AS runners will cross a creek and ascend single-track through and beyond the Finger Lake Land Trust's Lick Brook Gorge. From there it feeds through to Buttermilk Falls State Park where it begins the lollipop loop, traversing the upper old reservoir, merging w/ a scenic park road and descending on the Rim Trail to Trails Roc's Buttermilk AS. From there it ascends the Buttermilk Gorge Trail on its way back to the start. Fifty milers complete two circuits. 50k runners will complete one circuit plus one more trip to the Old Mill AS and back.

The elevation gain for the 50 mile is most likely somewhere around 9,000 though GPS devices have recorded as much as 11k+. It's tough to get a handle on an accurate read given the nature of the tight gorges and inaccurate signals. There are creek crossings around mile 7.5, and 18.5…hit again on the return so the feet will stay wet.

Drop Bags?

Drob bags will be permitted for both races. Please mark them with AS Name and your BIB# (which we'll have available the couple days before the race). AS1 / Old Mill for both races may not arrive in time for your first passing, so don't bank on that. Please also note that drop bags WILL NOT return until those Aid Stations close down following the last runner clearing that AS. If you need them earlier please go grab them via car on your way out. Although I have made the time and covered the expense to return some over the years, IF YOU LEAVE IT THERE IS NO GUARANTEE OF GETTING IT OR ITS CONTENTS BACK.

Poles, Pacers, and Crews

Yes you can use poles. However, our climbs are not that long and only a couple steep in parts. It's not the greatest fitting course for poles.

No to pacers.

Although the course is accessible to crews, please note that crews MAY ONLY AID YOU WITHIN AID STATIONS!

Refund Policy

We realize things come up, whether injury or family plans. While we have a no-refund policy, we will roll entries into another RNR event this or next year if notified no more than 30 days out from the race. No refunds or rollovers if notified within 30 days of the event.
