Applegate Trails 100

Kalamazoo, MI 100 Miler, 100 K, Half Marathon

This Event Took Place Sat. Dec 5, 2020

Course

The course is a 1.446 mile paved loop. Flat, fast and perfect for a PR. The route is entirely on residential streets and never crosses traffic. There are 6 left and 2 right turns but many long straight-a-ways. The route is flat with approximately 10 feet of elevation gain per loop, all at a very low and steady grade. There is limited residential traffic with no road crossings and no need to ever stop. There are many streetlights which are sufficient lighting to run with however a headlamp for additional lighting is a good idea. 69 loops for the 100 miler / 43 loops for the 100k / 9 loops for the half marathon.

Waitlist

This event is not sold out. We will be selecting entrants from the waitlist per capacity guidelines.

Aid

There will be one aid station on the loop at the start/finish line on Annandale Drive. The front yard will be available for each runner to set up their own aid station. Due to covid, each runner will be responsible for their own nutrition and hydration. This style of “self-supported” is reflected in the price. You may bring your own crew or run self-supported. The race will be accurately timed with a professionally measured course.

Dates

The date is scheduled for December 5th. The first alternate date is Dec 6th and emergency alternate date is Dec 4th. This event will not be cancelled due to inclement weather but simply run on the alternate dates. If any runner is unable to make the alternate dates and wishes to run on the 5th regardless, they will be allowed to do so. Timing will still be offered and accurate results recorded.

Covid

The race will be capped at 99 entrants. However, to comply with current state of Michigan rules that go into effect on Nov 18th we will waitlist all entrants after the first 9 entrants until we are 100% able to hold the event.. Because the entire event is outdoors and the aid station area is large enough for each runner and crew to socially distance, there should be limited exposure. The only time runners cannot be socially distance is when using the restroom. There is a port-a-potty at the halfway point and the residence at the start/finish line will have an indoors bathroom. Masks will only be mandatory if/when entering the restroom as that is consistent with state and local guidliness for an outdoor, socially distanced event.

Location

Race will start/finish on Annandale Drive in the Applegate Trails neighborhood of Kalamazoo, MI (49009). Please park on the east side of the road and north of the residence driveway. If any runner will like to park in the driveway, please ask in advance. All vehicles will be along the course and all runners will have access to their vehicles during the race (including to warm up for a minutes if needed). The start/finish residence will open for runners between 6:30am and 7:00am to warm up. Once the race begins, only the bathrooms will be available. Please be respectful of quiet hours (7pm-7am).

Records

The current known Michigan state records for each distance:
100k men - Josh Sanders, 8:32:07 (2020 Falling Waters Trail)
100k women - Laura Waldo, 9:49:20 (2011 Top of Michigan)
100 mile men - Johan Steene, 16:13:58 (2015 Woodstock 100)
100 mile women - Whitney Richman, 16:50:43 (2017 Lighthouse 100)

A customized trophy with engraved name and time will be presented to any runner who breaks the Michigan state record (please allow 2-3 weeks for custom engraving and delivery).

Swag

This event is designed to be self-supported if a runner chooses to do so, which will allow 100% social distancing. While all runners are free to bring a crew or run together, the purpose of this event is to be held no matter what. To keep the price down and allow a forum for a fast race we have chosen a looped course and there will be no shirts, volunteers or food/drink provided. Bring whatever nutrition and hydration you'd like. Bring a crew member or set up your own self-supported aid station directly on the course. Award medals for podium for both men and women in all distances. Photo of finish with official and accurately measured course also available/provided.
