The Lake Martin 100
The 2014 Lake Martin 100 will be held March 29 & 30 at Russell Crossroads on Lake Martin, one of America's most beautiful lakes. The run will be entirely on the private lands of the Russell Forest Trail System near Alexander City, in East-Central Alabama. This race will be the perfect "First" 100 or 50 mile trail race. Race planning is easy with four 25 mile loops on rolling hills and very runnable trails. 100% of the course is on trails, carriage paths and gravel roads, most of which do not allow cars. Approximately 80% of the run is on single track trails. Several miles of each loop are along the shores of the Lake Martin.
One hundred mile finishers will receive hand crafted custom belt buckles. Fifty and twenty seven mile finishers will earn custom finisher medals. Hot food, recovery drinks, coffee, hot chocolate and soup will be available in the Stables as runners finish all races. The awards ceremony will be at the Stables following the 100 mile race.
The Lake Martin 100 is destined to become the standard for first 100s and first 50s.

The Lake Martin 100 Mile Race will be a great "first long ultra" race. By long ultra I mean anything longer that a 50K. Anyone that can run a marathon can handle a 50K. When you move up to longer events, it becomes a whole new ball game. Instead of being on the road for 3 or 4 or even 5 hours, the average ultrarunner will need 8 or 10 and possibly 14 hours to finish 50 miles. Things like hydration, fueling, blisters, night running, etc suddenly become big issues. One of the most difficult things to figure out is what to put in each dropbag because you really don't know how to figure when you will arrive at a particular aid station.
The 100 mile race will consist of four laps of the 25 mile course, the 50 mile race is two 25 mile loops and the 27 mile race is one lap with a two mile out back section. Each loop will have four aid station stops ranging from 4 to 7 miles apart, but there are only two aid station. That is, each loop, runners will return to each aid station, twice. We will accept larger than usual dropbags (even plastic tubs) so it is not necessary to guess where you will need flashlight or extra socks. Your supplies will never be more than a few miles away. The course actually looks like three "Os" side by side with the edges touching. The aid stations are located where the Os touch.
