GIMME SHELTER 2020 Virtual Race

Dear Beast Ultra Runners, Friends & Family,

Given the current environment and unpredictable future surrounding COVID-19, we have made the difficult decision to convert this year's Summer Beast of Burden race that would have taken place along the Erie Canal on September 19-20, to a Virtual Race experience.

With the help of Ultra Sign Up and Social Media, we are allowing Beast Ultra runners to race in their hometowns, at the location of their choice. While we are very disappointed that we won't be physically hosting the event this year in Lockport, NY, we are excited to allow runners to join us virtually wherever they live.

We look forward optimistically to resuming our race series as usual next year, and are planning the 2021 Beast Ultramarathon Series on the following dates:

• Winter Beast: February 6, 2021
• Summer Beast: July 31, 2021

In the meantime, we present to you the first (and hopefully last ever?) “GIMME SHELTER 2020 Beast of Burden Ultramarathon”!!! Here are the new “rules” and guidelines for a safe & fun, socially distant Beast Ultra Virtual Race experience…

Virtual Race Rules:
• Who: All registered Beast Ultra runners
• What: This is a non-sanctioned, virtual race for fun. Times & distance completed will be posted as unofficial.
• Where: Runners are allowed to run in the town & location of their choice
• When: Runners may begin and complete their chosen distance any time between Saturday, Sept. 19 – Sunday, Sept. 27.
• How: The Honor System solely applies to start & finish times, and distance completed on the running course of the runner’s choosing.

Hardware:
Buckles and Medals will be provided to runners who meet the following simple criteria, based solely on the Honor System:
• Post a selfie style pic of your race start on the Beast Of Burden Facebook page and state your start time
• Post another pic documenting your finish location and time…it’s that simple
• Any runner who meets the normal 30 hour cut-off for 100 miles, or the 24 hour cut-off for 25 & 50 mile races, will be awarded their finisher buckle or medal by mail

Swag:
We are designing a special 2020 commemorative shirt for this race in your choice of colors and tank or tee style, from our apparel partner, Shirt Pickle. Every registered runner will receive a gift code to receive a free shirt. Watch your email in the coming days. Additional fun will be provided in the mail along with finisher hardware for cut-off time finishers.

More to come as the first (and hopefully last!!) virtual Beast Ultra nears. Please watch Facebook and your email inbox for updates!

Sincerely,

Bob & Ken,
Beast Ultra Co-Race Directors

Description

Are you ready for the Summer Beast of Burden?  Whether you are training to complete your first ultra distance event, or are a veteran of the sport, the Summer Beast of Burden is a true test of your endurance, set along the historic Erie Canal towpath. Athletes will choose either the 100 mile, 50 mile or 25 mile distance.

Runners start at Wide Water’s Marina where you'll have access to showers, restrooms and our fully stocked aid station. Runners leave the marina and run along a paved trail for approximately 1 mile before crossing the canal on one of Lockport's historic draw bridges and then run along the historic Erie Canal Towpath.

Athletes will run approximately 6 miles to another fully stocked aid station and a chance to get out of the sun.  Athletes then head out for another 5.5 miles to the Village of Middleport, where they will reach a third aid station and turn-around.

Our aid stations have hands down the best volunteers you will ever find, and all of the ultra food you will need to fuel your run, including Heed, Water, Coffee, Coke, gels, grilled cheese sandwiches, chicken broth, pizza, pancakes, donuts and...well, you'll have to show up to see!

"The Double Beast Buckle" is back! Not only do we have a really cool belt buckle, we give any 100 mile participant a "Double Beast Buckle" if they can finish both the Winter Beast 100 & Summer Beast 100 in the same calendar year.

So, you think you've got what it takes? Registration generally sells out early so don't wait, sign up today and get ready to unleash The Beast!
