State Park Series

State Park Series (SPS)

Welcome to Trail Maniacs State Park Series. When we first started Trail Maniacs I wanted to offer a race series that showcased the awesome trails in our state parks. Wow, I had no idea Trail Maniacs would grow this much and be so amazing! For 2017 we decided to keep our courses fresh and we are changing things up a little bit, well a lot actually! We are excited to announce that we are changing our race distances and will now offer a 10k course, 25k course and to challenge all of you ultra-distance folks, each state park race will offer a 50k course! While the 50k distance is challenging, if you have ever wanted to “dip your toes” into that distance these races will be perfect! Most of you are familiar with Trail Maniac races - we don’t give away finisher medals at each race; but we will give you a great race course, tons of free prize giveaways, an amazing post-race meal including adult beverages, and our series finale offers the most unique award that you will ever receive! 2017 is only getting better! Don’t worry if you cannot participate in the series though, each of our races offers a unique challenge, a ton of swag, and the post-race is worth the price of admission. Pick the race that fits your schedule best and we look forward to meeting you. If you are new to trail running start with the 10k course and go from there – c’mon its just 6-ish miles, what could possible go wrong?!

SPS is a trail run point series and will include the 10k, 25k and 50k distances. We will count your best 4 out of 5 races in the series. SPS will include five state parks from two states (Idaho and Washington) one race per month from May thru October. SPS will have over $6,000.00 in prizes for the overall series. These prizes are possible because of our great sponsors REI Spokane, Altra, Nathan, Clif Bar, Nuun and special thanks to our local running store Fleet Feet Coeur d Alene. And the series is a part of the Trail Runner Magazine trophy series Come stay the weekend, each of the state parks offer camping and showers!

For information about our fat ass runs and other non-SPS events subscribe to us on Facebook. Our 2017 SPS Race Series calendar will include:

5/20/17 SPS #1 Farragut State Park

6/17/17 SPS #2 Heyburn State Park

7/22/17 SPS #3 Mt. Spokane State Park

9/9/17 SPS #4 Riverside State Park – Bowl & Pitcher area

10/28/17 SPS #5 Halloween at Hell’s Gate State Park

Mount Spokane

***All Mt. Spokane distances are worth extra series points***

Welcome to the Mt. Spokane stop on the State Park Series. This is my favorite stop in the SPS, Mt Spokane is also the most difficult and this year we have all brand new course. This is the reasoning for the extra points. Mt Spokane does have limited camping on a first come first serve basis, they are small and do not have shower facilities.

Like last year we will have food provided by The Local Deli. The post-race tailgate will include 6-foot subs and salads from the Local Deli and a great beer selection from Slate Creek and Daft Badger breweries.

Courses:

The 10K is all new with less elevation gain and loss, all on the XC ski routes. Click here for the 10K Map and description.

The 25K course: All new! We incorporated more of the State Park, including a decent down to the Bear Creek Lodge. Then you climb all the way to Mt Kit Carson, Day Mountain and eventually Mt Spokane. From the top, you take a new route across the top of the Mountain so we can avoid the paved section of the Summit road. Aid stations are at mile: 4.4, 8.2, 11 and 13.
And include Nuun Hydration and Clif nutrition
With over 4600' of elevation gain and loss, this one will leave a mark!!! And you will earn the extra points for the series. Don't forget you are running at an elevation close to 5000' so the air is thinner than you might be used to. Make sure you hydrate and consume enough calories for this EPIC course!!! Click here for the 25K map

The 50K course: Can you say EPIC!!! So this is something that is entirely new to any race at Mt. Spokane. Your first 25K is very runnable, utilizing the XC ski trails your ups and downs are mild. But you are above or close to an elevation of 5000' so the air is thinner than you might be used to. Okay, the second 25k is not as mild. We incorporated more of the state park, including a decent down to the Bear Creek Lodge. Then you climb all the way to Mt Kit Carson, Day Mt and eventually Mt Spokane. From the top, you take a new route across the top of the Mountain so we can avoid the paved section of the Summit road.
Don't forget you are running at an elevation close to or above 5000' so the air is thinner than you might be used to. Make sure you hydrate and consume enough calories for this EPIC course!!!
Aid stations are at mile: 1.7, 9.6, 15.2, 20, 24, 26.5 and 28.5. And include Nuun Hydration and Clif nutrition. With the elevation gain and loss at over 7900' you will earn the extra points for the series. Click here for the 50K map

Time limits for the 50K: You must reach aid station #5 the Kit Carson aid station (mile 23) by 1:30 pm. And the summit of Mt Spokane aid station (mile 28) by 3:00 pm. I think this is generous at a 16 min per mile pace. Come prepared! If you do not make these times you will be DNF and given a ride back to the start/finish at the Selkirk lodge. I’m not trying to be mean, this is a safety thing. If you are concerned about these cutoffs, you need to contact the race director.
