Formerly The Driftless Discovery Trail Run.
The Crater Trail Run is nestled into Northeast Iowa's bluff country, a place unlike anywhere else in the state, and perhaps the Midwest to run the off-road, single track trails.
Van Peenen Memorial Park, the start and finish of the Crater Trail Run is one of Decorah’s 13 parks that make outdoor fun and staying fit a way of life in Winneshiek County. The trails are groomed, marked and ready for the more adventurous types. This area is part of the outstanding 17-mile system of single-track mountain bike trails. Take the chance to challenge your body by running them. The parks were even cause to be mentioned in Men’s Journal magazines “52 Great American Weekends” feature. Enthusiasts drive in from all parts of the Midwest to enjoy these trails. Come see why!
During your time in Decorah, you can explore our city’s premier campground, butterfly gardens, a scenic waterfall, the Upper Iowa River tubing and canoeing attractions, hiking, biking, and walking trails; not to mention the modern twist on Midwestern charmed business district where unique shops offer gifts and gear galore! But don't take our word for it...check it out!
-All runners in the 5k, 10k, 25k and 50k receive a nice piece of custom race swag, while supplies last. Goodies rustled up from our super supporting businesses in town will be offered up in a general entry raffle. You must be present to win and pick up your prize.
All money goes support the Northeast Iowa Montessori School and 25% is split between the Decorah Human Powered Trails (the creators and caretakers of the trails) and the Decorah Park and Rec.
All registrations are final but transferrable.

We supply water and electrolyte drink called Hydrate by Shaklee (100 calories per 8 oz.), and an assortment of energy goo packets at each aid station. 25/50k runners may place drop bags at 2 aid stations.n (aid stations are passed multiple times.) Bring your favorite fuel.
We know you’ll take out anything you bring in so the trails stay beautifully rugged.
-All turns will be marked clearly for each race.
- No runner is allowed to start a 2nd loop on the 50k after 11AM.
-Runners are allowed to change distances up until Friday night packet pickup. After that point, you are committed to the distance race you start Saturday morning and if you do not complete your race, you will be listed as a DNF. Say no to DNF! Each Runner must check in the morning of the race. Without morning check in, runner will be recorded as a DNS. Packet pick up on Friday and Saturday morning check in are totally separate. :-(
***NO LITTERING*** Please don't even think about it!
HEADPHONES - Not encouraged for safety reasons but seriously, unplug yourself, enjoy the view, listen to the sounds of nature and discover something new about yourself. Be cautious of other runners, the trails are tight in most places and the last thing you want is a fall because you couldn’t hear someone passing you.
