Description
The Devil's Backbone 50 Mile & Relay is one of Montana's most challenging ultramarathon events, set in the remote and rugged Gallatin National Forest and in the traditional territory of the Apsaaloké, Tsėhéstáno and Niitsitapi peoples. Designed for experienced trail runners, this race offers a demanding course that traverses high mountain ridges and valleys. The single 50-mile course with elevations reaching over 10,000 feet rewards runners with sweeping views of the Gallatin and Bridger mountain ranges. Both solo ultrarunners and relay teams are invited to test their endurance on this beautiful yet unforgiving terrain.
Race Options
Solo 50 Mile: For runners seeking the ultimate endurance challenge on their own.
Relay: Teams of 2 to 4 runners can split the course, taking on different sections of the rugged terrain.
Event Highlights:
Course Terrain: Single-track, technical trails, steep climbs, rocky descents, and sections at high elevations.
Elevation Gain: Over 10,000 feet of climbing, testing both strength and endurance.
Limited Support: Runners must be self-sufficient, with limited aid stations and checkpoints.
Wild Scenery: Stunning, remote views of Montana’s wilderness, far from crowds and civilization.
Who is the race suitable for?
The Devil's Backbone is recommended for experienced trail runners with strong mountain skills. Participants should be comfortable navigating remote trails, managing their own supplies, and handling sudden weather changes. This race is not advised for beginner runners.
What are the key race rules?
Mandatory Gear: All runners must carry certain required items, such as water, a GPS or map, a first aid kit, and extra layers.
Cut-Off Times: Runners must reach specific checkpoints by certain times. Check the race packet for these cut-off times.
Environmental Responsibility: All participants are required to pack out all trash, respect the natural surroundings, and avoid disturbing wildlife.
Are there aid stations?
Yes, but aid stations are limited and spaced far apart due to the remote location. Aid stations are located at the start/finish or turnaround points, approximately 24 miles apart, and will offer water, electrolytes, and light snacks. Runners should carry enough nutrition and supplies for self-sufficiency.
What’s the weather like?
Weather in the Gallatin National Forest can be unpredictable, especially at higher altitudes. Runners may encounter warm sun, rain, strong winds, or even snow, depending on the conditions. All participants should prepare for a range of weather scenarios.
Is there a refund policy?
Please review the event’s refund policy on our registration page for details. Generally, registration fees are non-refundable due to the preparation costs involved in organizing a remote, limited-capacity race.
