Mosquito Endurance Run
This race is hosted by the Friends of Fort Macon. Funds raised will benefit Fort Macon State Park in the preservation of a baby whale skeleton, upkeep of park trails, and other park enhancements. Run as many trail laps as you can from 7PM to 7AM, during a LUNAR ECLIPSE! One lap is 3 miles long for solo ultra and 3-member relays. The trail surface is a mix of cross-country trail type surfaces and sand.
Except for a start/finish line the course is not lit. Runners are required to have their own headlamps or other light source on them while on the course.
While this is a 12-hour race, there is no minimum required amount of time to be on the course, nor will you be disqualified if you do not run the entire time frame. One complete Lap of the course qualifies you for an official finish. Runners may run continuously throughout the race or take extended breaks during the race. Total milage for runners and teams will be calculated by the number of laps they complete before the finish line closes at 7 AM. Runners may receive crew support only at the start/finish area. At no time will crew support, baby joggers/strollers, and personal music players, which include earbuds will be allowed on the trail. No animals will be allowed in staging area or on the trail. Runners may declare their race over at any time by notifying race officials.
The course will feature a fully stocked aid station along with some drinks and snacks. If you have special nutritional needs, we recommend that you bring your own food to the event. This is a cup-free race — You must bring your own hydration devices. Also feel free to bring your own cooler (sorry folks, the park does not allow alcohol), tent, chair, canopy and/or other supplies for your own personal aid station that you can visit every Lap. Items are left at your own risk and are not monitored by park or race staff. The Fort itself will serve as staging area for runners.
Relay
Relay options for the race are teams up to 3 [2 or 3] runners running a three-mile course. It is up to each team to decide the order, and number of laps each team member will complete. There is no minimum distance or time requirement per team member, and there are no rules for the rotation within the relay team. Only one team member will be allowed on the trail at a time. Runners are allowed to use cell phones to notify team members of their approach to the relay transition area.
