About Tajik Mountain Traverse (TMT)
Tajik Mountain Traverse plunges you into the remote grandeur of the Fann Mountains, spanning rock-strewn peaks, verdant valleys, and shimmering glacial lakes. Over six stages across wild Central-Asian terrain, you’ll traverse ancient mountain paths — by day running rugged trails, by night resting under stars in tented camps. This is more than a race; it’s a full-on adventure through some of the most dramatic landscapes you’ll ever cross on foot.
Course
Runners will cover a cumulative 165km across six stages, tackling a total elevation gain of approximately 7,600 meters. The traverse includes multiple mountain passes — with maximum altitude reaching roughly 4,100 meters above sea level. Expect each day’s terrain to vary dramatically: rugged ridges, steep ascents and descents, glacial-fed rivers, alpine meadows, and high-mountain lakes. The final stage ends at the renowned glacial lake Iskanderkul — a dramatic finish after days of remote mountain travel. Because this is a stage race, you’ll traverse different terrain each day — from lakes to passes to valleys — giving a rich, varied mountain experience that few single-day races can match.
Aid Stations & Support
This is a fully supported stage race. Competitors run with a light pack, while organizers transport the main gear, food, and sleeping arrangements between camps. Each evening you’ll stay at a communal tented camp, with meals and sleeping arrangements provided. Water will be provided at checkpoints; runners are expected to treat or filter water drawn from natural sources. Medical personnel and checkpoint staff accompany the race, and there are protocols for drop-outs or emergencies.
Runner Experience
The vibe is intimate and communal: TMT caps entries at 30 runners, fostering a tight group of like-minded adventurers rather than a crowded event. Each day ends in camp with food, rest, camaraderie, and often lively storytelling around a shared campfire — a contrast to typical remote-solo mountain runs. You won’t just finish a race — you’ll journey across a wild region, live among fellow runners, and experience the mountains deeply. Expect varied weather, high altitudes, and shifting terrain — a test of endurance not just of speed. The reward: jaw-dropping alpine scenery, glacial lakes, and the sense of having crossed a remote, rarely visited mountain region.
