Who this race is for:This event is ideal for adventurous runners who want to test endurance rather than chase a fixed finish line—novice trail or road runners can give it a shot, as long as they’re ready to embrace the “how long can you last” format.
Event Overview
Imagine lining up at the track in bright morning light, surrounded by cheering community voices and the hum of anticipation. That’s the opening moment of the Airdrie Backyard Ultra, where the goal isn’t to finish fast—but to simply be the one still running when others stop.
The challenge is a repeated 6.706km (˜4.167 miles) loop every hour. You must start each new lap precisely on the hour, and finish within that hour to continue.
The course begins and ends in the grandstands of Ed Eggerer Athletic Park—giving friends, family and supporters a front-row seat all day (and potentially into the night). From the track it transitions onto a paved pathway around East Lake then flows through Airdrie’s welcoming neighbourhoods—so even though it’s a loop, you’ll soak in changing scenery and community energy.
As the day gives way to evening, the stadium lights turn on and the track becomes a glowing finish line for each lap—you’ll feel the crowd, the momentum, the ritual of “here we go again” as you step back into the loop.
Aid Stations & Support:
Basic aid station offerings (water, electrolytes, snacks) will be available at the start/finish area each loop. You’ll also have access to the amenities of the adjacent Genesis Place complex for crews and spectators. Crews may set up in the designated infield between loops; pacers are not allowed on the course.
Runner Experience:
This is more than a race—it’s a test of persistence, pacing, mental grit, and community spirit. You’ll find yourself in a loop of start-run-return-rest-repeat, but the rhythm becomes almost hypnotic: knowing that if you start the lap, you have an hour to finish, and then a moment to recover before the bell rings again.
The atmosphere promises to be fun and inclusive—with spectators able to cheer from the grandstands, local residents ringing cowbells along the route, and a vibe that welcomes newcomers while challenging seasoned ultrarunners. Being in a stadium setting adds drama—especially if you find yourself running into the night under lights. It’s approachable for first-timers, as the distance each hour is modest, yet the cumulative effect can be very demanding.
