A Legendary Trail Running Journey Across Ecuadorian Andes
This camp is designed for experienced runners looking to train in real mountain conditions while exploring the geographic and cultural diversity that makes this region unique.
Participants will run on volcanic terrain, high-altitude páramo, dirt roads connecting Andean villages, cloud forest trails, and lower-elevation jungle foothills. The Andes of Ecuador offer consistent elevation between 2,500 m to 5,000 m (8,200–16,400 ft), making it an ideal environment for altitude adaptation, endurance development, and technical trail practice on varied surfaces.
The experience also includes interaction with local communities, exposure to traditional food, and an understanding of how people live and train in the mountains. The goal is to combine structured running with real cultural context rather than a staged training environment.
Elite ultrarunner Hayden Hawks will accompany the group and share practical knowledge during the challenge including guidance on pacing at altitude, nutrition for long efforts, efficient climbing, use of poles, warm-up routines, among other things. All logistics—including accommodations, meals, and transportation between training locations—are organized to allow participants to focus on running, learning, and fully experiencing the Andean environment.
FAQS
Who can join this retreat?
Participants should ideally be comfortable running around 30-40 miles per week on varied terrain and should have experience with trail running and hiking that includes some elevation gain. This ensures you’ll fully enjoy the adventure and keep up with the group.. You will be guided throughout the entire tour by our expert guides.
What if I’m not used to altitude?
Altitude is not something you need to fear, but it is something you should respect. The key is taking proper precautions and allowing your body to adapt progressively. If this is your first time at altitude or if you are coming from sea level, we strongly recommend arriving in Quito at least two days before the retreat begins so your body can start adjusting.
The structure of the camp is intentionally progressive. As the days go by, both the elevation and the distances increase gradually, allowing your body to acclimatize step by step in a safe and controlled way.
What if I’m the slowest in the group?
You don’t need to worry about pace. We operate with three professional guides for the group, which allows us to divide participants according to their level and how they are feeling physically each day. This means stronger runners can move ahead at their rhythm, while others can maintain a steady and comfortable pace. The structure ensures that no one feels pressured, left behind, or forced to run beyond their limits. The focus is on safety, enjoyment, and shared experience rather than competition.
What if I’m traveling solo?
Solo travelers are more than welcome. About 95% percent of participants come alone. This is your chance to meet like-minded adventurers, form friendships, and share unforgettable experiences. For double occupancy, we will pair you with a same-gender roommate for comfort and safety.
Is this just for male runners?
Absolutely not. This retreat is open to everyone. Whether you come alone, with a friend, or a partner, you will feel included and supported. Our guides are both men and women, ensuring a balanced and welcoming experience for all.
If for any circumstance I cannot run one day?
We have private transportation available. If you need a break, the group will meet you at the next checkpoint so you will not miss out on the fun or the views.
What measures do you take to ensure the safety of individuals with food allergies, such as celiac disease or lactose intolerance, during activities?
We can accommodate most dietary needs. Please let us know about any allergies or restrictions well in advance so we can plan accordingly and ensure your meals are safe and suitable.
What should I bring?
We recommend arriving fully prepared for high altitude trail conditions, where weather can change quickly and terrain can be technical.
