HARDWIN VACATIONS · THIRD SEASON · FEBRUARY 2027
PATAGONIA
The Four Refugios
Bariloche, Argentina / 7 days / 10–12 travelers / $3,925
[DATES February 6 - 12, 2027]
Dedicated to the adventurer — to the ones who haven't left home yet, and to the ones who can never come home again.

Some places you visit. Patagonia decides what kind of week you're going to have — and you show up ready for whatever that turns out to be. That's not a warning. It's the whole reason to go.

Bariloche sits on the shore of Nahuel Huapi Lake with the Andes rising straight out of the water behind it. Granite spires, alpine lakes, and ridgelines that will be in your head for years. This is our third year running this trip, and every year we get better at it.

Here's the part that actually matters: the people. The thing every participant mentions afterward isn't the view from Jakob or the swim in Laguna Negra — it's the group. Strangers who became the people they text a year later. That doesn't happen by accident. We are deliberate about who we bring.

? FIELD NOTICE
Everything below is this year's layout, stated as clearly as we can state it. Hold it loosely. This trip is fluid the way the mountain streams around it are fluid — weather, trail conditions, hut availability, and the group itself shape what actually happens. The route bends around what the mountain gives us that week.

Hard, and Loved Anyway

Hard, and Loved Anyway

This trip is hard. That's not the surprising part.

The surprising part is what happens anyway. Two years of running this route, and every group has come off the mountain saying some version of the same thing: that was one of the best weeks of my life. Not despite the loose rock and the cold mornings and the day their legs gave out with four hours still to go — because of it. The hard parts aren't the price of the good parts. They're the source.

People come back. They bring friends. They text each other a year later about a swim in a black-water lake and a dinner that went two hours too long. Strangers walk in on day one and something else entirely walks out on day seven — and that has happened every single time we've run this.

We can't promise you good weather. We can promise you a week you'll still be talking about at Christmas.

The People Who Take Care of You

The People Who Take Care of You

You'll be pushed on the mountain and looked after everywhere else. That balance doesn't happen by accident. It's a team we've built over three years, and they are the reason this trip runs the way it does.

THE GUIDES
Professional mountain guides who live and work in this range. They've walked every line on this route in every kind of weather, they hold the local credentials and insurance required to guide in the park, and they read a group the way most people read a forecast. When they adjust the plan, it's because they've seen what happens when you don't.
THE HOSTS
Our Bariloche base team. Bilingual, local, and on call the entire week. They're the ones who have the groceries handled, the house warm, and an answer ready when something needs solving at 9pm in a town where you don't speak the language. Hospitality is not a small thing on a trip like this. It's half of why people come back.
THE PORTERS
Strong, kind, and faster than all of us. They carry the tents and group gear over the passes, and camp is standing before you walk in, every time. They eat with us, laugh with us, and quietly make the whole thing possible. You will want them in the group photo. Everyone always does.

Why Camp?

Why We Camp Instead of Sleeping in the Huts

Huts sound nicer on paper. In practice, almost nobody who has done both actually prefers them. Refugios are shared dormitory space — bunk beds, thin walls, strangers coming and going all night, headlamps at 4am, and there are always people who snore. And when a 30 strangers share one room's air for a week, illness moves through a hut fast. We have seen it happen. Just ask our first year crew. Half the team got very sick. However they still completed the hardest day while puking on the side of a mountain!! Good times

A tent is yours. It is quiet. If the person in the next tent has a cold, it stays in the next tent. Every group we've run this with tells us the same thing afterward — they expected to miss the huts, and didn't.

The water is clear, it is cold, and people swim in it anyway.
PROVIDED — CAMP EQUIPMENT MANIFEST
? Tents — provided, you pack nothing
? Sleeping pads — provided
? Porters carry every tent, set camp before you arrive, and break it down after you leave
You never carry a tent over a pass. Walk in — camp is ready.

The one exception: Jakob. At Jakob our group takes its own private room in the refugio — not the shared dormitory. One night indoors mid-trip, a real roof and a warm room to eat in together, is a good change of pace on this traverse.

Difficulty, Guides & The Group

Difficulty

The daily distances may look short to an experienced ultra runner. The terrain will keep you fully engaged anyway — loose rock, steep climbs, snow fields, forest, and exposed sections. The final day is the hardest, with real exposure on the traverse over Bailey Willis and López.

We've had hikers with limited technical experience come through fine on attitude alone. We've also had people learn on day three that this was more than they wanted. Both are normal — the application exists so you make that call before you pay, not on a ridge.

Guide talking through the route with a participant
GUIDE AUTHORITY
Certified AAGM guides evaluate every participant throughout the trip. If someone isn't ready for the exposed final section, there's a safer alternate line. The guides make that call, not the participant. That is not negotiable, and it is the reason everyone has come home.
The group at the Refugio Frey trailhead
The Group We're Looking For

This trip works because of who's on it, not just where it goes. We're not looking for the fastest people or the deepest race resume. We're looking for people who do hard things without making it everyone else's problem — who can be tired and cold and still be good company, who follow a guide's call, and who notice when someone else is struggling.

Twelve strangers spend a week eating together, hurting together, and finishing together. It's better because of the group every single time — and that only happens because we're careful about who ends up in it. That care is what the application is actually for.

How Registration Works

How Registration Works
APPLICATION FIRST. PAYMENT SECOND. NO EXCEPTIONS EITHER WAY.
STEP 1 Apply
Ten questions, about ten minutes, no payment due. This is where we figure out fit — in both directions.
STEP 2 We read it
Every application gets read by us, usually within a few days. If anything gives either of us reason to talk, we'll set up a short call before anything else happens.
STEP 3 Register on UltraSignup
Registering places you on the waitlist. Spots are confirmed individually after your application is reviewed — the waitlist is the line at the door, not a maybe.
STEP 4 Deposit — 50% now
Once you're confirmed, a deposit of $1,962.50 (half the trip price) secures your spot.
STEP 5 Balance — November 1, 2026
The remaining $1,962.50 is due at the start of November. We'll remind you well before.
STEP 6 Onboarding
Packing list, travel notes, group calls at 60 and 30 days out, and proof of travel insurance on file before departure. Nothing about this trip should surprise you on day one.
Not confirmed? Your deposit comes back in full. Change of heart inside the booking window? Standard consumer protections apply — full terms at registration.

Terms, Stated Plainly

Terms, Stated Plainly
READ THIS BEFORE YOU PRE REGISTER

You are never charged unless you are admitted. Pre registration stores your card. The deposit charges only when we admit you, after your application is reviewed. Not admitted? Nothing was ever charged.

Once admitted, your deposit becomes the real thing. A short window of full refundability applies after the charge, per standard consumer protection, and the exact window is stated at checkout. After that, your payment is non refundable, because at that point we are spending it on your trip: reserving the private room at Jakob, contracting guides and porters, booking the base house.

The balance auto charges November 1. If your card declines, you get an invoice and 7 days to resolve it. After that the spot can be released to the next person in line.

If you cancel more than 90 days out, we will work to recover what we can from our vendors and pass back anything recoverable, though this is not guaranteed. Within 90 days of departure, most of what we have committed cannot be recovered. This is exactly why travel insurance with emergency medical and evacuation coverage is required for every participant. It is the only reliable protection your money has against illness, injury, or a trip that does not go as planned.

Minimum group size is 10. If we do not reach it, we cancel with full notice and a full refund, no later than 60 days before departure. We will keep you posted well before you need to book flights.

Nature does not read itineraries. Weather and mountain conditions can change the route, the schedule, or the trip itself with little notice. Guide decisions made for group safety are final and are not grounds for a refund. This is Patagonia. The mountains are the reason to come, and they operate on their own terms.

Participants must be 18 or older. A signed participant agreement and proof of travel insurance are required before departure.

Who This Is For

Still Interested? This trip is for you, we are looking for you, as long as you are willing to take on the risk, the suffering, and come out smiling on the other side. Don't get us wrong its usually always sunshine and good times, but we want you to be mentally prepared for when it is not.

BEFORE YOU APPLY, IMAGINE THIS

You're two days into the trip when 70 mph winds pin us down on a mountain. The temperature is dropping, everything is wet, and the route ahead is no longer an option. You haven't slept, you're running out of dry clothes, and the trip you spent months preparing for is over. Now we have to turn around and fight our way back out. You're cold, exhausted, pissed off and miserable, and the person next to you is having an even worse day.

Do you still want to come?
