COURSE DESCRIPTION
Get ready to experience the beauty and challenge of Louisiana's trails! Our course features a scenic 10-mile loop combining the Blue Wing, Koasati, and Whoa Mule trails at Lake Bistineau State Park.
Runners will have access to two aid stations throughout the loop:
• Main Aid Station – Start/Finish: A fully stocked station offering hot food, trail snacks, and essential hydration.
• Mid-Course Aid Station – Approximately Mile 5: An unmanned station stocked with water, snacks, ice, and electrolytes to help keep you fueled and moving forward.
The course showcases classic Louisiana State Park trail terrain. Expect mostly flat trails with minimal elevation gain, but don't let the lack of hills fool you! Natural trail conditions include muddy sections, exposed tree roots, and varying woodland surfaces that will keep you focused on every step.
This is Louisiana trail running at its finest: natural, scenic, and a little unpredictable.
Want a better feel for the terrain? Check out runner and hiker reviews on AllTrails for additional insight into the trails.
LOCATION
Lake Bistineau State Park
Nestled along the western shore of Lake Bistineau, this beautiful state park offers the perfect backdrop for an unforgettable trail-running experience. With its towering mixed hardwood forests, open lake waters, and picturesque stands of cypress and tupelo trees, the park delivers a true Louisiana outdoor experience.
Beyond the trails, visitors can enjoy a variety of recreational activities, including fishing, boating, hiking, biking, camping, and more. The park features two boat launches, playgrounds, cabins, campsites, and plenty of scenic spots to relax and take in the surroundings.
A lake rich in history
Lake Bistineau's story dates back more than 200 years. Around 1800, a massive logjam on the Red River caused thousands of acres of land to flood, eventually forming the lake. As the area was gradually dredged, the water began to recede. In 1935, a permanent dam was constructed across Loggy Bayou, creating the lake we know today. The dam was later enlarged, resulting in a reservoir covering approximately 26.9 square miles.
A paradise for outdoor enthusiasts
Lake Bistineau is well known for its freshwater fishing, with popular catches including black crappie, largemouth bass, yellow bass, catfish, bluegill, and redear sunfish.
The park also offers nearly 10 miles of woodland trails and an 11-mile canoe trail, giving visitors plenty of opportunities to explore the area's natural beauty both on land and on the water.
The main park area includes cabins, group camping facilities, and numerous picnic sites equipped with tables, grills, and nearby restrooms. Picnic pavilions are also available for larger gatherings.
Whether you're here to chase miles, enjoy the outdoors, or spend time with family and friends, Lake Bistineau State Park offers a beautiful setting for an unforgettable weekend.
