Welcome to the annual Falcon 50 Race Series. This event has 4 race distances/options: the Half-Marathon, Marathon, Military Heavy, and 50 Miler. Join us and help continue the legacy while discovering how far you are able to push yourself.
The Falcon 50 Race Series, founded in 2011, takes place on the Air Force Academy Reservation and in the surrounding mountains. It is a scenic and challenging route that will take its participants through some of the most beautiful and challenging terrain the Academy has to offer. The route itself is primarily on dirt trails, but also includes sections where runners have the choice to run on a sectioned off portion of paved roads or on the dirt road shoulders.
The ultramarathon is the great equalizer of races. Young, old, seasoned racer, or fresh to the starting blocks... in the end, it will be your determination above all else that gets you to the finish line. The 50 miles of the Falcon 50 Ultra course ensure that this event will be one of the toughest athletic challenges you can undertake on the Academy grounds.
If it wasn't tough, then it probably wasn't worth doing.
This is a NON-PROFIT event. We will be selling Falcon 50 stickers for $1. All profits from the event will be donated to Air Force Sergeant's Association for their military support. Any canned goods will be donated to a local food bank.
Due to the ever-changing COVID environment, we have made the decision to limit the in-person Falcon 50 Race Series to USAFA personnel only this year. However, for the first time ever, a virtual event will be offered as an option this year! Extended to all non-USAFA personnel, the purpose of this option is to allow those from all over to still take part in the Falcon 50, despite the restrictions put in place to protect the current USAFA and Colorado Springs populations.
Registration for virtual participants will follow the timeline and prices of the in-person event. Each online participant will receive a registration packet by mail. Participants must still sign up before April 10 for a t-shirt guarantee; however, please note that it may arrive to you after the race due to shipping. Additionally, due to the unique nature of running each respective race on the USAFA course, belt buckle and patch eligibility will only apply to those participating in the in-person event. Regardless, registrants will still receive a Falcon 50 participation medal as part of the registration packet.
The virtual event may be run between Saturday April 17, 2021 – Saturday May 1, 2021 and must be completed within a 13-hour time frame. There will be information sent out closer to the race on how to submit proof of completion.
If the COVID environment dictates that we cannot safely execute an in-person event, we will switch to a completely virtual event. Understand that this means no refunds will be issued this year.
While the race route will remain the same, everything else will likely look significantly different than it has in past years in order to uphold CDC guidelines. More details will be provided as race day approaches (entry/exit flow, staggered starts, COVID procedures on the course, etc.). We ask that you be patient with us as we navigate the approval and coordination processes.
The four events you know and loathe are back, so hit the trails and get after it! For a course profile, please follow the following link: https://connect.garmin.com/modern/course/30371214
The course includes aid stations about every 4-5 miles (a more detailed race route will be sent to participants the week of the race). These stations are stocked with water, gatorade, energy gels, and potentially more!
Races will have the following start schedule:
0600: 50 Miler
0630: Military Heavy
0800: Half Marathon
For safety, all runners must complete before official sunset. A race cutoff schedule will be sent prior to the race start.
No racer will be prevented from attempting the 50 Mile course, so long as they meet cutoff times. This applies to both Marathon and Military Heavy entrants. However, in order to receive event specific finisher awards, like the Falcon 50 belt buckle, you must have registered for that event. If you would like to switch your registration to a different event, please notify the race director in a timely manner.
You can pack any gear, food, or water in the ruck. Additionally, this year, we will donate any canned goods used as ballast to a local food bank. We ask that those participating have at least 35 pounds of weight to be used for non-consumption purposes, whether that be weighted plates or canned goods. Ballast will not be provided at race start; please procure your own for the event. Participants will weigh rucks on the morning of the race to ensure fairness, so please plan accordingly.
The course starts at Stillman Field for all events and runs counter clockwise.
* Note on half-marathon division: The half-marathon is an out and back, NOT a loop.
* Marathon and Heavy Marathon: Since the course is approximately 25 miles, racers in these distances will complete a mini-lap around Road 239, Aviator Dr, and Parade Loop before the main lap around the course to complete the 26.2 miles
* Note on ultra-marathon division: The 50 Mile distance is two laps of the marathon loop WITHOUT the mini-lap.
Timing & Scoring will be conducted by CCR Timing via chip timing. The chip will be worn on the shoe. During the race, live results will be displayed on monitors located at the results tent.
Shortly after the race, full results will be posted to CCR's web site and on UltraSignup.
If there are any questions or corrections to race results please contact CCR Timing. Following the race, participants will receive an email to see full results along with a link to all the photos for the race and a short video of you finishing the race!
All paid entrants will receive a custom race shirt, access to aid stations throughout the course manned by volunteers of the cadet wing, and photos following the race.
All finishers will be awarded a finisher medal.
Male 50 Mile finishers under 9 hours and females under 11 hrs will be awarded the Falcon 50 Race Series Belt Buckle. Male Heavy Marathon finishers under 6.5 hours and females under 8.5 hours will also receive a Falcon 50 belt buckle. Additionally, all 50 Mile finishers will also receive a Falcon 50 patch (approved for A-Jacket use if applicable).
Directions to Race
Enter the Academy through N. Gate Blvd (Opens at 0530). Make a left at Parade Loop until you reach Cadet Dr. Take a right here and there will be the cadet parking lot on the left. The race itself wil be held on Stillman Field, which can be accessed by taking a left on Rd 239 but there is very limited parking here.
We ask that participants please refrain from parking in the Stillman Field Lot (as it has been overcrowded in the past while the race is in progress) and please find a parking spot in the athletic fields. To access the fields, instead of taking a left at Parade Loop, continue straight on Academy Dr and take a left at the bottom of the overlook into the lots near the track.
>For any questions regarding the race please contact the race director (C21Winifred.Chen@afacademy.af.edu) or OIC (Edward.Rozak@usafa.edu)
