2018 Pre-race Briefing
Runner update for 2018, the 40th Edition, Jed Smith Ultra Classic race:
Mother Nature has been good to us this year, so far. Our usual American River Parkway course is dry, clear and ready for some fast times on Saturday. No high water or flooding this year! Weather forecast is for cool morning temps, sunshine during the day, with high about 70 degrees.
Free parking (covered w/ race entry) in the AR Parkway – Watt Ave. River Access Park. (Address: 8713 La Riviera Dr., Sacramento, CA 95826) There is plenty of spaces for runners, volunteers and guests.
Packet Pick Up:
Pick up will be done Saturday morning, beginning at 6:30AM in the Start/Finish line area. Look for the U-Haul truck and tents at the far west end of the parking area.
7:30AM - 50 Mile race
8:30AM - 50K race
9:30AM - 30K & Hath Marathon
All races start at the west end of the parking lot and do a 2-4 mile out-an-back heading east through the parking lot and continuing upstream along the south bank of the river, then turning around and coming back to the start/finish line. Then you will start running the 4.9 mile loop course from there up to the Guy West Bridge crossing the river to the north bank and running back to Watt Avenue Bridge crossing the river again and running through the parking lot to complete the loop course and repeated 3 to 10 times depending on distance of your race.
Aid Stations: There will be two, the main one at Start/Finish line area and the other on the north side of the river next to the Howe Avenue Bridge. Aid Stations will be well stocked with soda, water & sports drink; candy, gel, salty snacks and other Ultra grub. The Finish line Aid Station will also have hot soup and post run food & beverages to enjoy.

Little History note: The 1st Jed Smith was a 50 mile race with a point to point course. It started in the City of Marysville at Ellis Lake Park. After a couple loops around the Lake it was out of town on the highway to Sacramento. There were few check-in spots at off-ramps/intersections along the way with water. If/when you are having a bad patch Saturday think about those adventurous pioneers running along Highway 99, things could be worse? :o)

The Jed Smith Ultra Classic is a very fast, flat loop course and it has seen some of the fastest 50K and 50 mile times in recent US history. The loop is approximately five miles in length and a mix of paved bike path and dirt road. This is not a trail run.
Please note: The levee work that has plagued us the past few years is finally complete and the course is in excellent condition as of September 21, 2015. Times should be faster as the course will include fewer turns and hills. Please let us know ahead of time if you are looking to set a record or run a 100K world championship qualifying time.
The Jed Smith Ultra Classic will be run along the American River on a course that we believe you will really enjoy. The staging area (start/finish) is the Watt Avenue access to the American River Parkway. Parking is included in the price of registration. It is a certified course and each loop is 4.85 miles long. It is nearly identical to the course used for the 2011 World Masters Championship Marathon. See the event website for additional details.
The Jed Smith 50Km is typically the first event in the Pacific Association USA Track and Field Ultra Grand Prix Series. In order to qualify for Grand Prix points and awards, you must be a PAUSATF member prior to the start of the race. Runners may join PAUSATF online.
The “service fee” for on-line registration is included in the price.
