Hatcher Pass

Hatcher Pass is one of the most scenic areas in the Matanuska-Susitna valley and draws in hikers, runners, bikers, and sightseers throughout the year. The Hatcher Pass Marathon takes place after the gates through the Pass are opened to the public after being locked all winter due to immense snowfall. In the winter, it's an outdoor enthusiasts playground, but the summers are the true spice of life in this area. From July through September Hatcher Pass is THE place to be!

The Race

The Hatcher Pass Marathon has become a staple in the Alaska running community, not just for it's incredible location but also for it's intense elevation gain of 4,943 ft. The first 25 miles of the race are uphill, some gradual, some steep, some switchbacks. The last 1+ mile is a downhill burner to the finish. The course will travel along Hatcher Pass road from Willow, up to the top at Summit Lake and finish at the Independence Mine parking lot. The route is slightly longer than 26.2 so it is not an official marathon course.
The relay event is a 3-person relay with each team member running about 8-9 miles. Exchange points are at Mile 9 and Mile 17 aid stations.
There will be around 6-8 aid stations stocked with water, electrolytes, and fuel but please be prepared with your own nutrition and hydration needs. ALL runners are REQUIRED to carry at least 16 oz. of water at all times.
Due to the remote nature of this course there is a strict 8hr finish cut-off for all marathon and relay runners. Any MARATHON runners who feel they will need longer than 8hrs to complete the race MUST start at the early start time of 6:00 AM. All other marathon runners and ALL relay runners will start at the official 7:00 AM time. Race will be chip timed with a gun start. Relay teams will all wear the same bib number and ONLY the last relay runner will wear the timing chip. Relay teams will receive a final team time.
Due to the cost and effort of putting on these races we will not be offering refunds, deferrals, bib exchanges or race transfers.
