VIRTUAL - Machete 7 Challenge

LIVE NOW! Out of necessity due to Hurricane Delta we have created a virtual option for out Machete 7 Challenge. Good news...this makes it possible for anyone to run this unique race from their hometown and earn the coveted MACHETE! Great way to have a crazy fun run with a group friends!

Run 3 separate runs in roughly 2 hours on 3 different terrains (when applicable)! This will take a bit of planning but will be a super fun way to earn your MACHETE...especially if you get some friends, where costumes and share pics on Cane Field Classic page and FB Event! 😂

1st: Race 1 Mile as fast as you can on any surface.
15 minutes after the start of your 1st run you must begin your 2nd race.
2nd: Race 4 Miles as fast as you can preferably on dirt/trail.
1 hour after the start of your 2nd run you must begin your 3rd/final race.
3rd: Race 2 Miles as fast as you can preferably in a field row, ditch or cambered surface (best way to mimic running down rows of sugar cane fields). Start your run with a .30mi sprint on a flat surface. Next locate a .10mi stretch(ditch etc) that you can repeat 16xs, making 16 - 180 degree turns, finish with a .30mi sprint to the location you started!

You will only be able to enter your total time for all combined races when reporting data!
Do Not forget to stop your watch/clock between runs! Between runs please only take the time you have left on the "running clock" which should start at the beginning of your first run.
Example of Reporting: 1st race takes you 8min, you have 7min of rest. 2nd race takes you 45min, you have 15min rest. 3rd takes you 24min.
Total Time: 8+45+24 = 1hr17min

When finished you will login to Ultrasignup, click the Orange RECORD RESULTS button and enter your data. We are wanting some from of proof...STRAVA etc or a picture of your total time.

What you will get:
The proper swag will be sent asap after your completion...MACHETE yep! 😎 Placement will not be recognized via awards for virtual race as the race is open for submissions until Nov 30th.

NOTE: Shipping will only be provided for those living outside of the Greater Baton Rouge Area. We ask that all who live within Louisiana consider trying to collect your Machete and swag if at all possible! The shipping is not CHEAP for a 25in MACHETE!

Covid Update: 8/31/20

We just got final approval we needed to make sure this race happens for the 11th consecutive year! Woohoo! Please spread the word. Like all events in these times we will have to follow certain guidelines in order to obtain our insurance and sanctioning. This will have some effect on what we can provide to runners but have no fear...there will be MACHETES!!!

COVID Safety Plan Part 1:

The below plan will be put into place for the safety of all participants, race staff, volunteers, spectators and site staff for CFC begin held on Saturday October 10th 2020.

-All attendees (Staff/Racers/Crew) will be surveyed upon approaching the Race Site to confirm (self-reporting) no signs or symptoms of COVID-19 in past 7 days (OR at least 7 days from onset of any COVID-19 infection signs or symptoms AND at least 72 hours since signs / symptoms have resolved.
-All attendees (Staff/Racers/Crew) will have their temperature checked upon approaching the Race Site in order to gain access to the event.

First thing...if anyone has any symptoms we ask that stay home!
All participants, race staff, volunteers, spectators will be required to wear a safety mask at all times when at the Race Site. The only exception will be racers taking off their mask immediately prior to their particular event start.
We will NOT have social gatherings at the Race Site, which encompasses the Start/Finish Line and sectioned off area around the Race Trailer. If you are bringing family/friends to support you, please inform them they will NOT be able to wait for you at the Race Site. The Park/Football Field is large enough to provide a waiting/gathering area but please be aware of others and keep a minimum 6ft distance at all times!
Every participant must be at least 6ft away from each other and stand on the DESIGNATED RED Flagged AREAS spaced out every 6-10ft. Your check- in time begins 45 min prior to your race start. Only come to the race site at this time. Signs will be posted and social distance markers (Red Tape) will be placed on the ground.
Approach Timing Trailer to receive your Bib#/pins, Race Swag, Finisher Medal, and Race Food/Drink. These items will be bagged for each racer and sanitized!
All Staff will have gloves and masks on. We will frequently be using cleaners and sanitizer for your protection and ours.
As our races already have a no paper or plastic policy, every participant must supply their own hydration container, and the provided water/Gatorade will ONLY be dispensed by our volunteers.

COVID Safety Plan Part 2:

We will have a social distance start grid layed out where runners will have to stand next to a marked flag in border to keep the proper social distance for each race.
At the start of the racers will line up according to their “minutes per mile”. 7-8 minute per mile will line up in the front, 9-10 minutes per mile, and so on down the line. We will NOT micromanage this but will facilitate it taking place.
Passing other racers - runners must pass on the left and give warning prior to approaching runners. Only pass when you can carefully pass with a minimum 6ft (Social Distance). After passing do not cut right in front of the passed runner to help avoid said runner from interesting your slipstream of air.
Hand Sanitizer will be available and will be encouraged to be used immediately after receiving your packet and upon finishing your race.
We will follow ALL Park rules and regulations and encourage you to follow common sense hygiene and to take personal responsibility for your own health/safety concerns and social distancing.
We are doing our best to provide a safe and fun environment for you to MOVE in a positive and challenging way. Please, let’s continue to extend mutual respect to one another, our WHOA Staff & WHOA Volunteers.

If the races become virtual, participants will have from 6am-6pm to complete the course on the day of the race. We will be at the Park as observers and to give any course instructions. There will be no timing, no bibs, and no water.

11th Annual CANE FIELD CLASSIC presented by GERRY LANE Buick + GMC

Called, "The quintessential Louisiana race", by an Louisiana Ultra Running Legend...this is a race you don't want to miss!

Runners will race down headlands (field roads), surrounded by mature sugar cane on all sides, travel along large canals and view the Louisiana State Capitol from afar. The Cane Field Classic is truly a race unlike any other! Live Cajun Music, great food, refreshments and fresh cut sugar cane will greet runners at the end of the race!

Run either the Machete 7 ( 1 Mile / 4 Mile / 2 Mile) or run just the Sugar Mile.

The Machete 7 Challenge includes the Sugar Mile, the Cane Field 4 Mile and the Rows of Hell... a 2 Mile run through the middle of low growth Cane Fields! The only way you can get the famous Machete/Knife is to sign up for the Machete 7 CHALLENGE!

Who doesn't want the; "Most DANGEROUS Running Medal in the World?"

Coming off of Hwy 1, drive pass Port Allen Middle School located on your Left. Take your first LEFT on to North Jefferson Ave and follow traffic flow into the parking area. If this area fills you will have to find parking in front of thew school, at Port Allen Elementary or along N. Jefferson Ave.

Unfortunately, we do not own a magic crystal ball thus we can not accurately predict shirt sizes for late registration. You may not receive a shirt on race day but they will be available for pickup at a later date. If shipping is required that will be the responsibility of the participant. The fields are flat and inspected prior to the race but all ruts, tire tracks, holes, mud and other naturally occurring changes can not all be prevented. Also, Trail Shoes are not required but older/dirty shoes are recommended especially if rain has fallen within a week before the race.

The Rows of Hell will be run through the middle of a cut field weaving throughout, running down rows and through rough terrain. This terrain is not level in any way and conditions could be dry to very muddy. Also, consider bringing a long shirt and running pants for this section.

Transfer Deadline:

Transfers will be allowed at a rate of $20.00 per a transfer. No transfers will be allowed after 11/1/2020


We will do our best to insure the event takes place!
NO Refunds or Rain Checks will be available.

In the current world of pandemics, disasters and such a virtual option will be created if we are forced to cancel. All virtual participants that submit results and data will receive shirts and appropriate medals.
