April 6, 2019 Update!
We deeply regret to inform you that this year's Ozone Endurance Challenge will be postponed until 2020, due to unexpected critical repairs at the host camp. Erosion around the Lake Ozone outlet (further exacerbated by recent historic flooding) must be addressed immediately to prevent the dam from potentially failing. Contractors have mobilized heavy equipment on site this week to start work on it. They must drain the lake first so they can excavate part of the dam and perform the required repairs. The work is expected to last into June, if not longer (weather permitting). Since the OEC race course crosses the dam every 2 miles, this directly impacts our ability to produce the OEC event until they have completed the repairs and the camp has returned to normal operations.
We know you have come to expect the best possible experience at our events. Unfortunately, these circumstances are beyond our control and won't allow us to deliver that to you this time. So along with you, we are very disappointed that we won't be able to have the event this year. However, we'll patiently wait for these essential repairs to be completed, knowing that our host camp will be the better for it next year. So... we excitedly look forward to returning in 2020, and cranking up an even bigger and better all day (and all night!) Zoner party with you ultra-crazy folks!
The 2020 Zoner party is coming!
Ozone Endurance Challenge run (#OEC) is a lovingly crafted, yet simple, family friendly event directed by Will Jorgensen and some of The Pistol Ultra Run team. It will take place May 27-31, 2020, at beautiful, family friendly Camp Ozone near Rockwood, Tennessee (near Knoxville).
Runners will follow a 2.0 mile USATF certified (TN18022MS) loop course through the camp and the surrounding woods around Ozone Lake and Fall Creek. The course consists of about two thirds shaded double track dirt which is almost all flat and relatively smooth (for trails). Then for variety, there are some sections of shaded/sporadically shaded gravel drive thrown in (with a grass shoulder to run on, if you prefer). The overall elevation gain is only about 60' per mile.
This event features timed races for 6, 12 (both day and night flavors), 24, 36, 48, 72 and even a super crazy long 96 hours! It is a great course for beginners and veterans alike, walkers and runners. Kids of any age are welcome to become a Zoner too! (Super cheap fees for those under 10. And they are eligible for finishers awards too!) There will be a full service aid station with plenty of great food at the start/finish area, which you will pass by every 2 miles.
To be an official finisher and score a medal, you only have to complete one 2 mile loop. How easy is that?! But of course your goal is to complete as many laps as possible within your chosen time limit. If you complete 50 miles or more, you will the proud new owner of a Ozone Endurance Challenge mug. And if you're a really crazy Zoner and crank out 100 or more miles, you will really step up your bling collection with a super cool belt buckle. So...how many laps can you deliver?
Besides getting to enjoy some quality trail time with all your crazy running peeps, some great race support, and swag, this is one event you can really feel doubly good about. A significant portion of your registration fees go directly to the camp owner, Children's Bible Camps, to help with their programs. A big thanks for your support!
