About This Race
The Sioux Falls Area Running Club (SFARC) is bringing trail racing back to Big Sioux Recreation Area. This is the first race in our annual Trail Race Series. Big Sioux Recreation Area lies on the banks of the Big Sioux River and is home to a campground, disc golf course, archery range, & more. The trail system is comprised of two dirt loops (Valley of the Giants Trail & The Prairie Vista Trail) which are connected by a paved trail that runs through the park. There will be access to port-a-potties and a covered picnic shelter along with a playground for the kids. All runners from beginners to veterans are welcome to participate. The 2 mile race length gives participants the ability to try out trail running and provides the whole family an opportunity to participate. The 4 mile route gives the participant the ability to run both trail loops and enjoy all that BSR has to offer.
2 & 4 mile are the same price. SF Area Running Club members get a $5 discount on any race in the series. Please select SF Run Club Mem pricing to get the discount. If you are not sure if you're a current member, please email firstname.lastname@example.org for confirmation.

$20 thru July - $25 thru Aug - $30 Aug - race day
The 4 & 2 mile races will start and end at the same point, which is the open area just east of the Picnic Shelter where the late registration, late packet pickup, and refreshments will be located. The races will both turn right onto the paved bike trail and continue until exiting onto The Valley of the Giants Trail going counter clockwise on the loop. When exiting VotGT the racers will follow the bike trail back by the start/finish area. The 2 milers will turn off and finish while the 4 milers will continue on the bike trail and veer off to the right following the river until crossing the suspension bridge. Be very careful trying to run on the bridge, walking is HIGHLY suggested. When exiting the suspension bridge follow the trail right and then head up the bluff going on the Prairie Vista Trail clockwise. Exit back to the suspension bridge and then backtrack all the way to the finish. Approximate mileage is 4.15 & 2 miles for the races. The routes have approximately .65 and .50 mile of pavement respectively. See Garmin Data for the routes here: https://connect.garmin.com/modern/course/13979743 - 2 mile w/ 80ft of elevation change

Race Day Entry
Online registration ends Thursday at 10PM. We will have limited race day entry up until 1/2 Hour PRIOR to the race start time. CASH or CHECK ONLY.
Do we need a park pass to get into the park on race day?
Local time: 7:09 PM
Yes, all State Parks require a park permit, or day pass to enter the park. An annual park permit is $30 with the option of buying a 2nd for $15 (for 2nd car or gift to friend). Day pass is $4 per person or $6 per car. Self registration envelopes will be available at packet pickup so you can fill out your information in advance and drop your envelope in the drop box. You can purchase an annual park permit online or at Scheels, The Outdoor Campus, Wal-Mart, and Ace Hardware. Go here for more information: http://gfp.sd.gov/state-parks/permits
Do we get a shirt for participating?
No, for the Big Sioux Rec & Good Earth Trail Races, we are giving out different items that will rotate yearly. The Newton Hills Race will still give out a shirt - type also varies yearly.
Are the races chip timed?
Not at this time. We hope to raise enough money through sponsorship and registration fees to be able to purchase a chip timing system in the future.
Are headphones allowed?
Yes, but you must be mindful of your surrounding if wearing them. Trail races generally take more concentration given the terrain, and with narrow trails and many turns, you'll need to be able to hear if people are needing to pass you and take directions from any volunteers.
Can I get my money back if I can't run?
No, but if you do cancel 14 days prior to the race, you can put your fee towards another race in the series.
I've never run trails, how do I train for these races?
Find a gravel road, run on the grass next to the sidewalk or bike trail, or better yet, head to Sertoma Park and run the flat, wide trails there. There is also single track trails along the south side of the bike trail in Yankton Trail Park between Minnesota and Western Ave. This will get you used to running on uneven ground. Be very careful as you ease into it and be mindful of you footfalls. After you've mastered that, head to any of the other trails around Sioux Falls: Leaders Park, Great Bear Recreation Area, Big Sioux Rec, Good Earth State Park, Newton Hills, Beaver Creek Nature Area, Union Grove State Park, etc. SFARC host a group run every Thursday night at Good Earth State Park - 6pm - if you'd like to run with a group too.
Can I run with my dog?
No, pets are not allowed to run in the Trail Race Series.
