This is a challenging 21K loop with a double-loop option for a 42K. Consisting of mostly single track trail, the loop will take you to every corner of the park and showcase all three of the rock crushers that give the race its name. Ruffner Mountain is an old mining site in urban Birmingham that has been reclaimed by nature and is now maintained as a nature preserve. Trails are technical and incorporate 4,500' of elevation change across the single 21K loop. Course will be marked with sprinkler flags, survey tape and signage at turns. Runners may switch between the 21k and 42k distances at any time before the race by notifying race officials. The Exceptional Foundation is once again providing handmade, one of a kind finisher's awards for the 21k. The 42k will have a new surprise finisher award!
This is a 100% charitable race. All proceeds go to Ruffner Mountain Nature Preserve to help them continue the great work they do. Because this race is for charity, we do not issue refunds. If you cannot make it, consider it a donation to this amazing nature preserve.
This race will probably sell out this year!!! Sign up early. If you are registered, but realize you can't make it, please delete your registration on Ultra sign up. This will allow another runner the opportunity to enjoy this awesome event.
Details
Packet pickup: Friday, October 6, 4:30 - 6:30 p.m. at Mountain High Outfitters, 2800 Cahaba Village Plz, Mountain Brook, AL 35243.
Race Day 6:30-7:30AM
Start: Saturday, October 7, 8:00am for 21K/42K,
Course: 21k loop, 2 loops to make the 42k.
Course cutoff is roughly 8hrs for both distances. 42k runners must start the second loop before 12:00pm. Anyone not making that cutoff will be dropped to the 21k and receive a 21k finisher award.

Aid Stations: There will be an aid station at the start/finish, at Salvage Rd and at Gray Fox Gap (you go through this aid station twice). Aid stations will have water, Tailwind, gels and other basic ultra aid station fare. NOTE: please bring a handheld or hydration pack. October in Alabama tends to get warm in the afternoon. You will NEED hydration between aid stations. New this year: no paper cups at the aid stations to avoid extra garbage at the Preserve. Hydrapak will provide each participant with their reusable, collapsible Speed Cup, to help racers produce less trash at Crusher and beyond.
Food: We will have the grill going at the finish. Please hang out after you finish your race and have a burger, chips, cookies, and a beverage (some of the adult variety). Vegetarian options will be available. Families are welcome to eat as well!
Shirts: Shirts are unisex cotton t-shirts. In order to get this year's shirt, you must have registered by September 24th. Shirts will be ordered on September 25th. Anyone registering after then will get last year's shirt (sizes not guaranteed).

Course record is determined by the fastest time from 2015-2016 (we will be using the same course for 2017 as we have since 2015).
Record for the 21k Men is: 2:08:11 and Women is 2:26:05
Record for the 42k Men is: 4:13:46 and Women is 5:44:52.
