We are very happy to announce that the Quad Rock 50mi/25mi has provisional approval from the Larimer County Department of Public Health, Lory State Park and Horsetooth Mountain Park! The approval is contingent on pandemic requirements remaining at (or improving from) their current levels of restrictiveness. Help keep the curve flattened!
Many thanks to innumerable friends and resources who helped craft a plan where the event can safely happen.
There’s a lot to communicate. Whether you are a runner, volunteer, pacer or crew – we need you to read it all – before you come to the race – including our full list of safety protocols and race changes (http://gnarrunners.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/2020-Quad-Rock-50-25mi-COVID-19-Protocols-v1.pdf).
As the pandemic continues to evolve, there is a strong chance some of these protocols will too. We promise to communicate any changes via email, social media and our website – but it is ultimately your responsibility to read, understand and follow the full list.
Here is a summary of the main points:
ALL participants (runners & volunteers) are required to:
Sign a COVID-specific waiver (https://forms.gle/RCtafp2HzASruoqz7)
Wear a mask at all times, except when 1) running 2) eating/drinking
Have a contactless Temperature Check upon arrival. Those with temperatures above 100.4F will be required to leave
Limited Menu & Service at Aid Stations
Drop Bags available at all Aid Stations
(Towers/Horsetooth must be dropped off Friday night; Towers is strongly discouraged and only in place for runners with significant special needs)
Crew and Spectators Strongly Discouraged
Wave Starts & Earlier Overall Start Times (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1AERTSdMkhO0W1BK9thSbjyVwsAPU3ySzDSARnglT6qM/edit?usp=sharing)
No Awards Ceremony, Food/Drinks-To-Go
We all look forward to a fun, relaxed atmosphere celebrating a return to racing, yet we all also know things will be different. Our approval to hold this race is contingent on following safety protocols submitted to and approved by the Larimer County Department of Health , and we appreciate you playing your part. Those not cooperating will be asked to leave and could be subject to disqualification. We really don’t want to have to do that, so let’s all play by the rules and continue to gain trust as a responsible user group.
If you feel unsafe taking part with the protocols we’ve put in place, or this year’s race experience will not be fulfilling for you, we encourage you to defer. 100% credit transfer to 2021 will remain open for another week, through the end of the day on July 14, after which point our normal deferral policies will resume.
We are reducing our field size. The 50mi is limited to 150 runners and the 25mi to 200 runners. Runners on the wait lists as of July 6 can expect to receive an entry invitation. Further opening of entries is TBD.
As ultrarunners ourselves, we are doing our best to strike a balance between a fulfilling race experience and ensuring we can manage risks to your health and safety. Please contact us any time with questions.
COVID-19 Update - April 8, 2020
After the latest round of data and recommendations from public health agencies, we have decided in partnership with our permitting partners at Lory State Park and Horsetooth Mountain Park that the best course of action is to postpone the date of the 2020 Quad Rock 50/25mi to August 15.
On Monday, Colorado Governor Jared Polis issued an extension of the current state-wide stay-at-home order until April 26. While we agree with his optimism that life can begin returning to normal past that date, we feel that we can neither adequately prepare for Quad Rock in that shortened window nor safely conduct the event on its originally scheduled date of May 9.
With help from learned friends, we understand the latest data trends from the CDC indicate that by late summer events like Quad Rock could proceed safely. We will continue monitoring the situation, and implement safety procedures as necessary. Depending on the transfer rate, we may explore adding an additional shorter distance on race day.
Registered runners have four options:
Stay registered for Quad Rock 2020 on August 15 (No Action Required)
Receive 100% transfer credit toward Quad Rock 2021 (Email Required)
Receive 75% transfer credit toward any of our other 2020/21 events (Email Required)
Run a Virtual Quad Rock during the month of May, practicing appropriate social distancing, and receive finisher race swag (Email Required)
Registered runners, please email firstname.lastname@example.org if you’d like to take advantage of one of the transfer credit options or complete the race as a virtual run. If you wish to stay registered for August, no response is necessary.
Transfers, please reply by June 1. We will return to our normal registration policy after that date. Virtual runners, please reply by May 1. We will begin extending invitations to runners on the waitlist May 1. If the August postponement date becomes non-viable due to ongoing COVID-19 concerns, the above transfer & virtual options will be extended until September 1.
Again, thank you to all our runners, volunteers, crews and community for your patience as we navigate these unknowns. We are thinking of you each day. Stay safe, and we’ll see you on the other side.

COVID-19 Update for Wait Listers - 5/7/2020
While our planning proceeds and our optimism grows, the postponed date of August 15 for Quad Rock is not yet a certainty, and we are continuing to hold off on issuing wait-list invitations.
As a wait-lister, your spot is guaranteed (should you want it) if Quad Rock does happen in August.
Once we're confident the race will be held, you’ll receive an entry invite from us. You’ll have 72 hours to confirm your registration and approve the charge to your card. If you decline the invite, you will not be charged.
Colorado’s ‘Safer at Home’ phase of the reopening plan (no groups of 10+) is in place until at least May 27. While we don’t know when we’ll be comfortable sending out invitations, it will not be before that date.
There’s no risk in remaining on the wait list, but if you wish to withdraw, just log on to your UltraSignup account and go to “Registration History” and “Edit” your Quad Rock entry.

Welcome to the Quad Rock 50 & 25 Mile Trail Races, an event put on by trail runners for trail runners.
Taking place on the trails and hills west of Fort Collins in Lory State Park and Horsetooth Mountain Park, the Quad Rock 50 will take you on a tour of the Fort Collins skyline, situated on the northeastern flanks of Colorado’s mighty Rocky Mountains. Look east from the course’s high ridges and you will see the Great Plains extending as far as the eye can see; look west and you will take in the layered ridgelines and summits of Northern Colorado’s Rocky Mountain swell, dominated 30 miles away by a towering Longs Peak, the undisputed monarch of Colorado’s northern Front Range.
We aspire to not only offer a first class trail racing experience on a challenging, scenic, and impeccably marked course, but also a top-notch, post-race experience that will leave your bellies full, your feet tapping and your mouths yapping.
The 25-mile loop will take you to the base of two of the more prominent granite outcroppings atop the West Ridge of the Fort Collins skyline by way of the Mill Creek drainage and the Spring Creek Valley. All told, you will ascend a touch over 5,500 vertical feet on more than 23 miles of premium, gnarled-out singletrack connected by two miles of dirt road. Run the second loop in reverse for a full 50 miles and a net vertical gain in excess of 11,000 feet.
Hang around after your run for music, barbequed goodness, awesome awards, and some mighty tall tales.
That’s how we roll in The Fort. Welcome!
