Join us May 18th for Spence Mountain 30K and 50K Trail Runs
The 2nd Annual Spence Mountain Run will consist of two events.
Local time: 3:01 AM
A 50K starting at 8am and a 30K starting at 9am.
The event will be held at the Shoalwater Bay Trailhead off of Eagle Ridge Road (Gravel) approximately 20 miles northwest of Klamath Falls. The Trailhead for the start/finish and parking is approximately 2 miles from the turn off from Highway 140 (see event photographs for location of Shoalwater Bay). There is a small camp ground with four sites that are first come first serve (free) camp spaces including a vault toilet (no water available at campground). The campground is located 1.5 miles past the trailhead on Eagle Ridge Road. Spence Mountain is sometimes referred to as Doak Mountain Summit on signs along Highway 140.
Packet pickup will be at Asana Yoga & Sole in Klamath Falls, Oregon from 4pm to 6pm Friday afternoon or at 7am on Race Day. After the online registration closes, sign up is allowed during packet pickup on Friday in person at Asana Yoga & Sole from 4 to 6pm. Late signups risk not receiving race swag. No race day sign ups will be allowed.
Early start is allowed 1 hour before each event if you will be over 6 hours for the 30K or 7 hours for the 50K.
Each finisher will receive swag gifts including a medal and custom logo koozie. In addition, there will be free food and beer at the finish line for runners and volunteers only.
Cut off time will be 3pm for both events at the finish line. Awards will be presented at 1pm for the 30K and 2pm for the 50K for the overall male and female winners of the event, age group (first place male and female in each category 10-19; 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, and 60+) awards will follow.
Both events will be primarily on single track trails with a few miles of gravel forest roads. Most of the trails are technical in nature with tree roots, rocks, drops, etc. Both events will climb to the summit of Spence Mountain. Both events run the first 30K on the same course (https://www.strava.com/activities/1568357425). See Ultrasignup photos for the event for maps (revised from original routes). The 50K adds 13 miles to the end of the 30K course (we are working to revise the course to be all single track, updated course to be published in January 2019). The 30K event will be between 18 and 19 miles, the 50K event will be between 30 and 32 miles, dense tree cover and new trails will lead to inaccuracy in measuring the distance. .
We do not offer refunds or transfers on race registrations. The Lopers have to plan for and pay for the event, aid stations, food, permits, etc. up front in the process. We are a local non-profit organization with limited financial and volunteer resources.
Weather (hot, cold, rain, mud, snowing, snow on the ground, etc.) and air quality could be factors on race day. Please plan/train accordingly. Weather in the Klamath Basin in May/June is typically 30 to 40 degrees overnight and 50 to 80 degrees in the daytime. The courses are primarily shaded as they run through areas with thick timber/brush.
Aid Stations will be every 5 to 7 miles on the course (see map in event photos). Volunteers will be located at critical trail junctions.
A special thank you from the Lopers Board to the Klamath Trails Aliance (KTA) and Asana Yoga & Sole. Please visit www.klamathtrails.org to learn more about KTA and www.asanayoga.net to learn more about Asana Yoga & Sole. Both have been very helpful with organizing local trail maintenance/construction. Asana Yoga & Sole is also Klamath Falls premier running and yoga store. Thank you to Mark Goodman for donating his time to make maps for both events.
