Virtual Race Info

The Naturalist 25/50k trail race is going Virtual
Due to lots of unforeseen circumstances this year, we are moving The Naturalist – 25/50k trail race to a Virtual Race. This is much like a traditional race, but instead of starting in one place at one time, participants get to choose their own time and location to run the distance for which they are registered. You can choose to run a particular trail you like, run your favorite roads, pick a point to point route, fire up your treadmill, or choose a combination that sounds fun to you. Just choose a day when you can start and finish your race distance all in one time frame.

What if I haven’t registered yet?
No problem! Visit: and register for the race. Race registration will remain open until September 9, 2020. The race proceeds will benefit the Bartram Trail Society, to help with trail maintenance over the 116 miles it covers within NC / GA and further educate others about the importance of this beautiful trail!

Pre-registered racers let us know if you are still racing
We still need to get a head count to know if you are still racing or not, so we can order swag items for participants. We will not be offering any deferments to the 2021 race. Please notify us by email before September 9, 2020 to confirm your decision on participating in The Naturalist 25/50k Virtual Race. Our email address is:

How do I submit my time?
Once you complete your virtual run, send us an email that shows evidence of your completion! We normally would celebrate with music, food and lots of craft beer….but make the best of it and have a good time! We would love to post about you, and your accomplishments on our website and on our social media pages. Take pictures and feel free to tag us on your own social feeds too! What comes with my registration?
All race registrants will receive a race bib, custom race swag and some other awesome items. You will also receive an official finisher medal for The Naturalist 25/50k upon completion of your race, which will be recorded in the Ultrasignup results. In addition to our standard race completion, we will be providing a special prize to one male and one female, awarded for “Best Virtual Race Creativity.” These prizes will be given based on photos, videos, and data emailed to us by finishers. Show us your best costume, unique running route, or special skills while running! We will also be donating all leftover race registration funds to the Bartram Trail Society. COVID-19 hasn’t just affected businesses, but also non-profits. We want to supply the Bartram Trail Society with funds to further develop trails and provide the best possible experience on the trail when others are out exploring!

When can I complete my run?
We are giving you from October 1 - 30th, 2020 to complete your race distance in one day. That means you can lace up your shoes and pin on that bib, anytime, day or night, weekday or weekend, rain or shine, as long as you complete your distance within one 24 hour period. Bib and swag pickup will be scheduled for the last week of September at Outdoor 76 in Franklin, NC, and other arrangements will be available for non-local runners.

The Fine Print
Although your finish time and distance will be officially recorded, there will be no individual awards, course records, or top times associated with this year’s cancelled trail race, except for our “Best Virtual Race Creativity” prizes. **Evidence of completion can include: emailing us an upload from Strava, Garmin or an alternative GPS tracking app, or taking a photo of your GPS watch stats. It’s all about having fun….so be honest and do the dang thang!

The Naturalist Trail Race - 25 / 50k, which is a part of the Outdoor 76 FALL CELEBRATION, is back for another round of leg hurting fun on October 3, 2020! This day encompasses our trail race, 3 bands throughout the day along with 18 draft craft beers for all post race celebrations!! Our sponsors this year include: The North Face, NC Bartram Trail Society and Salomon.

Come explore the same trails that William Bartram, "The Naturalist", ventured on in the late 1700's. This ultimate 50k will cover some of the most challenging ground in the Southeast. Runners will leave from downtown Franklin, NC at 8am and travel to the Bartram Trail area on Wallace Branch. Here runners will start the brutal climb that ultimately leads to Wayah Bald. From the Wallace Branch trail head to the top of Wayah Bald is approximately 11 miles. The 25k will have over 5500' of climbing (50k will have over 8,500' of climbing), making your legs feel weak just reading this. There will be multiple stations with food and water. 25K racers will end on Wayah Bald after running up the Bartram Trail. When 50k racers reach Wayah Bald they will circle the bald, resupply then head back down the Bartram Trail. Make sure you grab a t-shirt as you cross the finish line located on the square in downtown just earned a spot in the "I'm Incredible" book!
